CHARLOTTE, N.C.- Queens carried over their momentum from the double overtime win on Saturday to roll over Erskine College Wednesday night at the Ovens Athletics Center by a score of 84-65. It is the first time the Royals have won back-to-back games this season.
Queens (6-14/5-8 Conference Carolinas) held the lead for almost the entire first half, but found themselves trailing by two at the end of the half.
Daniel Bailey (Irmo, S.C., Hammond )started the second half off right with a three pointer, with an assist by Reggie Hopkins (Gastonia, N.C., Ashbrook), to put Queens up by one. For the night Queens was 13 of 22 for three point attempts. Bailey was a perfect 4-4.
The Royals built on the one point lead and found themselves ahead by eight just under the midpoint of the half. The Royals weren't able to go on big scoring runs, but their ability to hit threes all night long and pull down defensive rebounds gave them the edge over the Flying Fleet.
Around the glass Queens limited Erskine to just nine offensive rebounds while they grabbed 25 of their 35 rebounds on the defensive side of the ball. Bailey was a monster on the defensive side snatching 11 of the 27 defensive boards for Queens.
Preston Newlin (Graham, N.C., Graham) contributed four three in the game and took just five three point shots.
Queens found an offensive rhythm in the second half making 21 of 29 baskets (72.4%), and improvement from the first half when they were 12 of 25 (48.0%).
Erskine struggled to hit shots most of the night, making 12 of 31 in the first half (38.7%) and 11 of 28 in the second (39.3%).
Brandon Wright led Erskine with 19 points and four rebounds while Jay Boulware scored 13 and pulled down one board. As a team the Flying Fleet had 21 rebounds.
