MISENHEIMER, N.C.- Reggie Hopkins (Gastonia, N.C., Ashbrook) scored the team-high 27 point in the Conference Carolinas loss to Pfeiffer University Thursday night in Misenheimer, N.C. The Falcons overpowered the Royals 103-91.
They Royals (6-17/5-11 CC) out-scored the Falcons(13-9/10-5 CC) 52-40 in the second half, but it wasn't enough to pull themselves out of the 24 point halftime deficit, 63-39.
Queens trailed by as many as 29 during the game, but chipped away at the lead with stronger shooting in the second half and were able to get as close as seven points, 95-88, with 2:51 to play. The Royals were unable to reel the Falcons all the way in.
Hopkins scored 15 of his 27 points with three point buckets, going 5-8 from behind the arc. Overall, the team was 47.8% from the floor, after having a much improved second half. During the first half, Queens struggled to connect on shots, shooting 39.4%, but the second half was a different story. The Royals were 20-36 for 55.6%.
The Falcons took advantage of the slow start, but more importantly were able to convert the Royals 23 turnovers into 40 points.
Currently, Pfeiffer is ranked second in the nation in scoring offense, averaging 96.2 points per game. In the game Thursday night, they were 45.7% from the floor.
In addition to his 27 point, Hopkins had seven rebounds, one assist, and two steals. Daniel Bailey (Irmo, S.C., Hammond ) added 13 points with six rebounds. Patrick Fox (Eden, N.C. , Morehead) marked 12 points and three assists. Rounding out double digit scoring for Queens was Kevin Fowler (Mexico, N.Y. , Mexico Academy) with 11. He also pulled down five rebounds.
Chris Woods (Thomasville, NC) led all scorers with an astonishing 32 points, going 12-for-16 from the field and 6-for-9 from the charity stripe. Woods also pulled down four rebounds, had one blocked shot, and had one steal. James Crowder (High Point, NC) added 20 points for the Falcons, going 7-for-14 from the field, 4-for-10 from the arc, and 2-for-2 at the line.
Queens will take to the hardwood again on Tuesday, February 19 at 7:30pm against Coker College.
