FAYETTEVILLE – Queens University of Charlotte fell to the Fayetteville State University men's basketball team 80-79 after losing a 16-point halftime lead at Capel Arena on Wednesday night. With the loss the Royals fall to 4-3 and the Broncos improve to 3-5. It was the first road loss of the season for Queens.
The Royals, who were led by 15 points from Devon Seaford (Charlotte, N.C., Hope Christian Academy), nailed nine 3-point field goals and opened up a 47-33 halftime lead.
The Broncos went on a 19-5 run midway through the second half and cut Queens' lead to 68-66 with eight minutes left.
Andre Lockhart (St. James, Barbados, Coleridge and Pany) hit two free throws with 35 seconds remaining to give Queens a one point lead,79-78. Then with 19 seconds left on the clock a foul was committed by Lockhart putting FSU's Jarrick Jones on the line to gain the lead for the Broncos. He scored both points from behind the charity stripe giving FSU their biggest lead of the game which ended up being enough for the win.
The Royals were led by Seaford's 15 points. Antonio Stabler (Garner, N.C., Wakefield)recorded his first double double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Reggie Hopkins (Gastonia, N.C., Ashbrook) had 13 points to go with his eight assists. Daniel Bailey (Irmo, S.C., Hammond ) tallied ten points and seven rebounds.
Jamel Carpenter, the CIAA's leading scorer, had a game-high 22 points and was one of five Broncos in double-figures. Thompson had 10 points and four rebounds and Davon Hood scored 13 and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. Larry Ross added 11 points while Jarmel Baxter contributed 10.
The Royals will travel to Catawba on January 2nd to play the Indians in nonconference action at 4:00 p.m.
