BANNER ELK, N.C.- The Queens women's soccer team went to Lees-McRae with a five-game winning streak and an early goal in the game looked like they would head out with one more game added to the streak, but the Royals were defeated in Conference Carolinas action by a score of 2-1.
Kristen Wright (Salisbury, Md., Parkside)did what she has been doing much of the season, scoring her 14th goal of the year 18 minutes into the game. Wright received a long ball and was able to find the back of the net giving the Royals (8-10-1/6-3-1 CC) a 1-0 lead.
Queens held the Bobcats (10-6/7-3) off until five minutes into the second half. Emily Jones scored the equalizer with assists from Vickie Rich and Allison Keith. Megan Hirschy (Fort Wayne, Ind., Shattuck-St.Mary's School) was in the net for Queens, having entered the game at the break.
Just over a minute later Lees-McRae struck again scoring what would be the game-winner. Maribeth Novak served a ball and Tiffany Coleman finished the ball, her first goal of the season.
Lees-McRae had ten second half shots compare to seven for Queens. The Bobcats also held the advantage in the first half with eight to the Royals four. Each team had three corner kicks.
Brittany Bolton had four saves in the win. Kristen Kornacki (Glen Allen, Va., Deep Run ) made eight saves in the first half, and Hirschy made four saves in the second half.
The loss drops Queens to fourth in the conference with one game to play. The top four teams host the first round of the Conference Carolinas tournament that starts on Nov. 2.
