CHARLOTTE, N.C.- It came to the last five seconds of the double overtime Conference Carolinas contest when senior Patrick Fox (Eden, N.C. , Morehead) tossed up and off balance shot to give Queens University of Charlotte the 104-102 win.
Queens (5-14 overall/4-8 CC) was leading 80-78 with 1:19 to play in regulation when a Royals bad pass led to turnover and Anderson to tie the game with 30 seconds left.
Fox scored his first clutch basket of the night with two seconds left in the first overtime period off of an assist from Preston Newlin (Graham, N.C., Graham). Anderson had hit one of two free throws to give themselves a two point lead, but Fox did not let the Royals go down in the 2009 Homecoming game. The teams were deadlocked at 94-94.
It looked like Queens was going to seal its fate by holding a five point advantage midway thought the second OT period. Anderson came back and tied the game at 102 with a Jarret Johnson field goal. The Royals committed two turnovers after the field goal, but were able to recover and get Fox the ball inside the key for the basket.
The win is the second double overtime game for the Royals in as many games. On Thursday the team fell to Coker 90-84.
The contest was fought tooth and nail all night with neither team able to gain a strong lead over the other. The largest lead of the entire game was just six points, held by Queens 72-66 late into the second half, and the large crowd saw 21 lead changes and 22 ties.
It came down to shooting. Queens held a slight advantage from the floor, 49.3% to 45.5%, and was stronger from the charity stripe, 38.5% to 28.6%. In overtime play Queens was 9-15 from the floor and Anderson was 5 of 14.
Jonaldaren Baldwin (Burlington, N.C., Graham), who fouled out before the end of the game, led all scorers with 27 points. The Royals had four other players in double figures, Fox (20), Reggie Hopkins (Gastonia, N.C., Ashbrook) (16), Daniel Bailey (Irmo, S.C., Hammond ) (16), and Charles Burgess (Spartanburg, S.C., Boiling Springs) (10). Bailey had Queens' only double-double of the game with 16 points and 12 rebounds.
Anderson's Brandon Young scored 25, while Stephen Cobb recorded 18 Nick Trull had 16.
