CHARLOTTE, N.C. (December 19, 2008) – Patrick Fox (Eden, N.C. , Morehead) led all scorers with 28 points as the Royals defeated Fayetteville State University tonight at Ovens Athletic Center 95-80. The win gives Queens University of Charlotte a record of 1-1 in conference play and 2-6 overall while the Broncos fall to 7-2 overall.
The first half of play found the Royals and the Broncos evenly matched as the lead changed six times, and there was a total of four ties. The Royals took the largest lead of the half at the 9:11 mark with an 8-0 run. Fox scored all eight points with two three point shots and a lay up. The Broncos came back to take the lead off of a three pointer by Jason Thompson, and ended the half ahead with a score of 42-41. The Broncos shot 47% from the floor, while the Royals finished the half shooting 52% without leading scorer Reggie Hopkins (Gastonia, N.C., Ashbrook) who left the games after an injury in the first five minutes of play.
The second half of play resembled the first in that there were eight lead changes and nine tied scores. The Royals traded baskets with the Broncos until taking the lead at the 5:08 mark off of a basket by Charles Burgess. Queens held the lead for the remainder of the game, with as much as 15 points over their competitor. Queens ended the game shooting 54% on the night compared to the opponents 42%.
Fox had four rebounds and two assists to go along with his 28 points of night. Daniel Bailey (Irmo, S.C., Hammond ) tapped in to every category on the stat sheet recording 19 points, six rebounds, two blocked shots, and three steals. Jonaldaren Baldwin (Burlington, N.C., Graham) and Charles Burgess (Spartanburg, S.C., Boiling Springs) chipped in 13 points a piece.
For the Broncos, Ariel Robinson and De'Shaune Griffin each scored 15 points. Jason Thompson led the team in rebounds with seven.
The Royals return to the court after a short holiday break on December 30th at Mars Hill College. Tip off is set for 8:00 p.m.
