CHARLOTTE, N.C.- Sami Striano (Clearwater, Fla., Countryside )scored two in the Queens University of Charlotte 4-0 win over Lees-McRae College tonight t the Queens University of Charlotte Sports Complex at Marion Diehl Park. The victory keeps Queens (6-7-2/6-0-1) at the top of the conference, Lees-McRae sits in ninth with a record of 9-6 overall and 2-6 in conference play.
The Royals are coming off of a tough weekend in Columbus, Ga., where they lost contests to Columbus State University and Armstrong Atlantic State University. Any thoughts of loss were not show on the faces of Queens tonight. From the start the Royals came out strong and poured on the offensive pressure, but just couldn't get the ball across the end line.
Everything changed when Striano scored her third goal of the season when she finished a cross from Amanda Wright (Salisbury, Md., Parkside ). The assist is Wright's second of the season.
Wright would get her chance to score in the 34th minute. She carried the ball down the field, taking a low shot to the far post beating goalie Brittany Bolton for her first goal of the season.
Queens outshot the Bobcats 11-6 during the first forty-five minutes. Bolton made three saves and Queens keeper Kristen Kornacki (Glen Allen, Va., Deep Run )made four.
Striano struck again just two minutes into the second half. Kathryn Sylvester (Raleigh, N.C., Apex )crossed the ball inside of the six yard box and Straino was able to strike for the finish.
With just a little under four minutes left to play Katherine Carr (Upper Marlboro, Md. , St. Mary's ) notched her third score of the season assited by Katherine Johnson (Chapel Hill, N.C., Northwood ) to give Queens the 4-0 win.
Michelle Landry (Atlanta, Ga., Druid Hills )jumped in the net for Queens for the second half and was not asked to make any saves. The Bobcats also made a goalie change in the game. Marissa Middleton played 30 minutes for the Bobcats and made two saves.
The Royals finished with 18 shots and three corner kicks while limiting Lees-McRae to eight shots and two corners.
Queens will honor its seniors on Saturday as they play Barton College at 2pm.
