Women's Soccer Drops Contest to AASU

McCarrell scores in the 3-1 loss

COLUMBUS, Ga.- Megan McCarrell (Oviedo, Fla., Oviedo )scored for Queens University of Charlotte women's soccer team in the 42nd minute of play tonight against Armstrong Atlantic State University at the Peach Belt/Conference Carolinas Challenge in Columbus, Ga. McCarrell's goal wasn't enough to lift the Royals over the Pirates as they fell 3-1 in the non-conference contest.

The Pirates (6-3-3) scored an early into the match, 1:48 in, to take an early 1-0 lead. Peach Belt Player of the Week Kristin Burton scored off of an assist from Jamie Craine.

Queens' (5-6-2)defense stepped up and held the No. 7 regionally ranked AASU team from scoring for the next 23 minutes. Lianne Stricklen and Erin Holt combined fur the second goal of the evening. Erin O'Rourke added the third goal for the Pirates in the 34th minute.

McCarrell put Queens on the scoreboard with the help of Erin Likins (Leavenworth, Kan., Leavenworth ). The assist is Likins' first of the season and McCarrell's second goal. McCarrell's goal was scored on the only Royals shot of the half. 

The Pirates out-shot Queens 12-1 during the first stanza.

The second half ticked by without either team finding the back of the net again.

Queens tallied two more shots in the second half and limited AASU to eight. Kristen Kornacki (Glen Allen, Va., Deep Run ) made four saves in the first 45 minutes of play for Queens and Michelle Landry (Atlanta, Ga., Druid Hills )also made four in the second half. Tracey Mitchell made one save for the Pirates.

Katherine Johnson (Chapel Hill, N.C., Northwood ) led the Royals with two shots. Burton had the game-high eight shots.

The Royals face their second nationally ranked opponent in five days as they take on No. 7 Columbus State University on Sunday in the second day of the Peach Belt/Conference Carolinas Challenge. On Oct. 7 Queens tied No. 19 Belmont Abbey College 1-1 at the Queens Sports Complex at Marion Diehl Park.
