Kelsey Long begins her second season as an assistant coach for Queens University of Charlotte women’s basketball program. While serving as an assistant coach, Long has worked toward obtaining her Master’s degree and is entering her final year in the program at Queens obtaining a degree in the field of Communication.
As a collegiate player, Long was a scholarship standout at Belmont Abbey College where she was recruited and coached by Coach Susan Yow for three of her four seasons. Long was a four year starter during her collegiate career at Belmont Abby. During her last season, Belmont Abbey’s team finished first in Conference Carolina and advanced to the second round of regional play.
During her time as a collegiate student-athlete, Long was recognized as a Conference Carolinas Basketball Academic All-Conference Team, listed on the Presidential Athletic Honor Roll, made the Dean’s List, and was introduced into the Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society May of 2015.
Long is in charge of a variety of areas such as: overseeing the hiring of team managers, monitoring academic progress of individual players, serving as a liaison between professors and the student-athlete as it relates to missed classes due to team travel, overseeing team meals for home and/or away game, assisting with on-the-floor-coaching, working with player’s skill development individually, assisting with the monitoring of weekly study tables, and filling in wherever needed.
“Kelsey has been a great addition to our staff,” said Head Coach Susan Yow. “Her familiarity to our basketball system and expectations made her a perfect selection to assist Coach Megan Duran and me as we work to build a top contender in the South Atlantic Conference”.
Long hails from Pilot Mountain, North Carolina where she attended and played basketball for East Surry High School. She is the daughter of Brent and Carmen Long, and her brother, Carson, will be an entering freshman at Guilford College where he will be a member of the men’s basketball program.
