CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte Department of Athletics is proud to announce their annual summer awards series, celebrating the outstanding accomplishments of its student-athletes during the 2025-26 season.
Award winners will be revealed every Tuesday and Thursday throughout the summer across the department's official social media platforms. Today, we recognize the winners of the Mark Kelso "Just Show Up" Award.
Mark Kelso "Just Show Up" Award
Presented by the athletics department for a student-athlete who has made a difference in the Queens Athletics Department by 'just showing up'. Particular emphasis will be on game attendance, demonstrated acts of school spirit, and visibility within the athletics department.
This award was initiated as a result of Dr. Mark Kelso's Hunter-Hamilton Love of Teaching Award speech at fall convocation in 2017. Dr. Kelso is a political science and international studies professor and a loyal supporter of Queens Athletics. Each athlete listed below has been identified by their respective coaching staff for impacting the program positively.
Men's Winner – Shane DiMantova, Men's Track & Field
A standout leader within the Queens athletic department, Shane DiMantova consistently embodied the spirit of the Mark Kelso "Just Show Up Award" through his service, enthusiasm, and commitment to the Royals community. A four-year member of the men's track and field team, DiMantova earned recognition as the Rexy's Fan of the Year for his unmatched support of fellow Royals teams and presence at athletic events across campus.
Beyond the stands, DiMantova was heavily involved in SAAC and served the department through an internship with the sports information office, where he assisted in creating media content and promoting Queens Athletics. He also played an active role in game operations for home events, always willing to step in and help wherever needed. His energy, school spirit, and dedication to elevating the student-athlete experience made him a visible and valued member of the Queens community.
Women's Winner – Haley Ross, Women's Swimming
A leader both in competition and across campus, Haley Ross has made a lasting impact on the Queens athletic department through her passion for service, advocacy, and school spirit. An All-ASUN swimmer for the Royals, Ross also served as President of SAAC, helping strengthen the connection between student-athletes and the broader campus community while consistently promoting engagement at Queens athletic events.
Ross further demonstrated her commitment to inclusion and leadership as the founder of the American Sign Language Club, creating opportunities for education and connection across campus. She was a familiar face at both men's and women's sporting events, frequently organizing activities and encouraging attendance among students and student-athletes alike. Ross also showcased her school spirit in unique ways, including signing the National Anthem at Queens athletic events. Her visibility, enthusiasm, and dedication to uplifting others have made her an invaluable representative of Queens Athletics.
