THE SHORT STORY
Queens University of Charlotte was shutout in game two of the series, 5-0, by visiting Florida Gulf Coast University tonight in ASUN action. The Royals were held to three hits for the game, while the Eagles tallied seven hits.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Dylan Schaffer, in the bottom of the third, reached first after being hit by a pitch and later moved to second before the inning ended. He would be the only Royal to reach second base all game.
- After both teams went scoreless for the first three innings, FGCU pushed four runs across on five hits, with one of the hits being a three-run home run in the top of the fourth to take an early 4-0 lead.
- FGCU in the fifth added another run to make it 5-0 after five innings.
-
Jacob Grimes in the fifth looked to get something going for Queens when he singled through the left side, but FGCU got back-to-back outs and then was able to throw Grimes out trying to steal second to end the frame.
- Grimes singled in the eighth to start things off, but a double play ball cleared the bases, and a flyout to right center ended the inning.
- Going to the ninth, the Royals looked rally late like in game one, but were unable to as they were set down in order to end the game.
Â
BY THE NUMBERS
- Queens' only free pass of the night was a hit by pitch.
- All three Royals hits were singles.
- Grimes led all Royals hitters, going 2-for-3, while Huneycutt tallied the team's only other hit, going 1-for-4.
- Grimes is 3-for-7 in the series with a run scored and a double.
- The Royals' bullpen tonight, made up of
Brayden Martino and
Johnny Joseph, allowed just one base runner in the form of a walk to reach in two innings of work, while striking out two.
- Starting pitcher
Joey Ruller went seven innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits, while striking out five.
