THE SHORT STORY
Looking to even the three-game weekend series on Saturday afternoon, the Queens University of Charlotte baseball team dropped a tough 7-1 tilt to West Georgia. The Wolves offense scattered 14 hits on the day while limiting the Royals to seven as the visitors clinched the series with the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-West Georgia jumped on the board early, plating two runs on three hits in the top of the first inning. Cole Anthony led off the inning with an infield single before David Bell moved him over with a sacrifice bunt. Patrick McCullough followed it with an RBI single to center field to plate the first run of the game. Andon Lewis stepped in and drove the first pitch he saw to right field and a balk was called to move both runners into scoring position. Mason Cooper capitalized with a sacrifice fly to extend the early lead to 2-0. Queens escaped the jam by throwing out Lewis, attempting to steal home.
-Queens cracked the scoring column in the bottom of the third inning with one run on two hits.
Dylan Schaefer led off the frame with a double to left center before a deep fly out from
Grayson Childers advanced Schaefer to third.
Hunter Huneycutt stepped in and laced an RBI single through the left side to plate Schaefer and cut the deficit to 2-1.
-After being held in check over four straight innings, West Georgia extended their lead in the top of the fifth inning with three runs on five hits. Blane Schmitt led off the inning with a single to right field, and Landon Weidner followed it up with a two-run home run to left center to give the visitors a 4-1 advantage. Anthony Colde and Patrick McCullough strung together singles to keep the pressure on, and Andon Lewis turned on a 2-0 fastball and singled to left field to cap off the three-run frame.
-The Wolves carried that momentum into the sixth inning, plating two more runs on two hits. With the bases loaded and no outs, Landon Weidner sent a two-run single down the left field line to extend the West Georgia lead to 7-1.
