THE SHORT STORY
The Queens University of Charlotte baseball team battled early and even held a mid-game lead, but a big sixth inning from Jacksonville shifted momentum as the Dolphins pulled away late for a 17-5 win on Friday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Jacksonville struck first with a pair of runs in the second, but Queens answered quickly. An RBI sacrifice fly from Justin Hudson in the second and an unearned run in the third tied things at 2-2. The Royals then grabbed their only lead of the night in the fifth when Grayson Childers launched a solo home run to center.
The Dolphins responded in a big way in the sixth, stringing together six hits, including a two-run double and a two-RBI triple, to score five runs and take control at 7-3. Queens continued to fight, plating a run in the sixth on a bases-loaded walk and another in the seventh on Hunter Huneycutt's solo homer to cut the deficit to 7-5.
However, Jacksonville's offense proved too much down the stretch, exploding for six runs in the eighth and four more in the ninth to put the game out of reach.
