The Short Story:
The Queens University of Charlotte baseball team picked up the series victory over Jacksonville on Sunday afternoon behind a dominant start from right-hander
Landry Jurecka. The Greenwood, Arkansas native turned in his second complete game of the season and struck out a career-high 14 batters, a mark that tied the most in a single game in school history.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Queens jumped on the board first in the bottom of the second inning when junior
Justin Hudson deposited a solo home run over the left field fence.
-The next inning, Queens capitalized on an error by the Dolphins to extend their lead to 2-0.
Tyler Peters worked a leadoff walk before
Lenox Lively moved him into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt.
Ryan Brown stepped in and delivered a fly ball to center field allowing Peters to advance to third. With two down,
Jake Barbour reached on an error by the Jacksonville second baseman allowing Peters to score.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Royals added a crucial insurance run behind three hits to extend the lead to 3-0.
Ryan Brown and
Jake Barbour worked back-to-back one-out singles before
Nick Alderfer was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jacksonville turned to their bullpen looking to escape the jam, and Nick Anello struck out
Logan Schmitt to inch the Dolphins closer. However,
Anibal Rivera stepped in and flared a 3-1 pitch into center field to bring across
Ryan Brown.
-Down to their final three outs, Jacksonville put together a rally as Josh Steidl led off the inning with a single up the middle. Blake Delamielleur followed the single up with a double to right center to put a pair of Dolphins in scoring position. Aidan Masters stepped in and delivered a two-run double to left center to put the tying run in scoring position. Jacksonville turned to small ball as Carson Stevens dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move the tying run up 90-feet. Queens head coach
Jake Hendrick took a mound visit, and it paid off as
Landry Jurecka picked up a strikeout and a fly out to strand the tying run at third and secure the series victory.
