The Short Story:
Despite multi-hit performances from
Jake Barbour,
Ryan Brown, and
Justin Hudson, the Queens University of Charlotte baseball team dropped a Tuesday afternoon tilt at Radford by a final score of 9-4. The big innings guided the Highlanders as the home team plated five runs in the third inning and three runs in the fifth inning to drive their scoring. Queens rattled seven hits and drew seven walks, but the Royals stranded 13 runners on base.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Radford jumped on the board first as Hunter Keen sent a one-out double down the right field line. An infield groundout moved Keen to third before James Ward laced an RBI single up the middle to give the Highlanders a 1-0 lead.
-The Highlanders erupted in the bottom of the third inning with five runs on three hits. The rally was started when James Ward sent a solo home run to right center. Following a one-out double down the right field line that plated two Highlanders, Zach Paczewski plated the sixth run of the game with an RBI groundout.
-Queens answered back in the top of the fourth inning as
Justin Hudson opened the frame with a double down the left field line. A ground out from
Lenox Lively moved Hudson up 90 feet and
Nick Alderfer brought home the junior with an RBI groundout.
-In the bottom of the fifth inning, Radford plated three runs on three hits and capitalized on a Queens error. Tyler Kehoe and Kyle Crisp got the inning start with back-to-back singles before Brady Powell walked to load the bases. Queens brought the infield in and a ground ball to
Jake Barbour was thrown home, but a misplay by the Royals allowed the run to score. Eli Hudgins capitalized on the error with a two-run single through the right side to extend the Highlanders lead to 9-1. With runners on the corners and nobody out,
Marshall Pile induced a fly ball to left field and
Tyler Peters made the catch and fired a rocket home to cut down the Highlanders baserunner tagging up.
-Queens responded in the following half inning with two runs on two hits. The Royals loaded the bases following a leadoff single from
Lenox Lively and consecutive walks from
Nick Alderfer and
Will Budnick. Radford turned back to their bullpen and the new arm picked up a strikeout. However, he wasn't out of trouble yet as
Jay Polite grounded out, but managed to plate Lively.
Jake Barbour worked a walk to load the bases again and
Ryan Brown delivered an RBI single to cut the deficit to 9-3.
