Wofford Squeaks Past Queens

CHARLOTTE, N.C. –The Queens University of Charlotte women's lacrosse team (3-6) fell this afternoon to Wofford College (3-6) by a score of 12-11. The loss to the Terriers is the first for the Royals who lead 2-1 in the series.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Queens opened the game with a 2-0 lead following a pair of goals from Kayleen Favreau. However, the Terriers quickly put two goals on the board late in the period to knot the game up. A goal from Anna Bednarz with 2:13 on the clock gave the home team a 3-2 lead heading into the second quarter.
 
An early goal in the second from Wofford tied the game up again before Elise Grissett scored back-to-back goals to put the Royals back on top, 5-3. The Terriers answered with a 2-0 spurt to even things at 5-5 before the two teams traded goals to close out the half, giving the game a 6-6 score at the break.
 
Wofford regained control of the lead with two goals early in the third quarter before the Royals put together a 4-0 run to move back in front, 10-8. The Terriers closed the margin to one with 29 seconds on the clock, but Jordan Tandler answered with a goal just before the horn to keep the Royals in front 11-9 heading into the final 15 of action.
 
The Terriers held the Royals scoreless in the final quarter of play while adding three more goals to the board to escape with their first win over Queens.  
 
KEY STATS & NOTES 
  • Kayleen Favreau totaled four goals and one assist while Elise Grissett finished with three goals and two assists.
  • Ashley Martin notched the first goal of her collegiate career.
  • Isabella Swanson and Grissett secured five draw controls each to account for 10 of Queens'13.
  • Michela Paterson and Savannah Donahue recorded three caused turnovers each.
  • Devan Maready finished in goal with five saves and five ground balls.
  • Carlie Cutinella, Bria Foley, and McKenzie Moeller had two goals each for Wofford. Foley also had five assists to finish with seven points.
  • Ella Smithers had nine saves in goal for the Terriers.
  • Queens placed 20 shots on goal compared to Wofford's 17 shots on goal.
  • The Royals also won the battle for ground balls, 20-16.
  • Both teams recorded 13 draw controls.
