CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Queens University of Charlotte men's volleyball team got their revenge against Quincy in the series finale on Wednesday, Feb. 5, winning in three sets (25-17, 25-20, 25-23) to mark their first conference win of the season.
SET ONE
Queens set the tone early, jumping out to a 10-5 lead behind strong play from Carson Strawbridge and Matthew Pilch. The Royals' defense proved tough to break down, as they recorded three team blocks in the frame. Quincy struggled to find offensive consistency, hitting just .067 in the set. A final kill from Chance Shampine sealed the set win for Queens.
SET TWO
The second set remained close through the first half, with both teams tied at 12-12. Queens then went on a 6-2 run fueled by Nathan Vaupel and Shampine, forcing Quincy into a timeout. The Royals' serving pressure, including two aces in the set, helped them maintain the lead. Strawbridge and Pilch combined for eight kills, and Queens closed out the set with a decisive block from Shampine.
SET THREE
Quincy put up its toughest fight in the final set, leading 16-15 at one point. However, Queens responded with a key 4-1 run led by Marin's distribution and Pilch's finishing at the net. The Hawks kept it close, tying the set at 23-23, but Strawbridge delivered a clutch kill before a Quincy attack error secured the sweep for the Royals.
"We were pretty disappointed in how we failed to answer the bell last night at the beginning of conference play, and I give Quincy a lot of credit for how they played last night. They played with high energy and a pretty high level of execution, and they were just flat-out better than us last night," Head Coach Jeremy Price said. "Our team took some responsibility and we focused on executing the scouting report and playing like we were capable of playing. I think this was a good win; to come out to get it done in three sets to be as efficient as we were offensively."
