Queens Drops ASUN Opener at FGCU

THE SHORT STORY
The Queens University Royals faced a tough challenge in their ASUN Conference opener against the 14-time regular season champions FGCU Eagles. Despite a strong fourth quarter, the Royals fell 81-58, dropping to 6-6 on the season (0-1 ASUN), while FGCU improves to 10-3 overall and 1-0 in ASUN play.

BY THE NUMBERS
- Jordyn Weaver tallied a team-high 14 points, shooting 7-for-13 from the field, and added eight rebounds.

- Aylesha Wade contributed eight points, including two three-pointers, and dished out four assists.

- Magda Freire scored eight points, hitting a three-pointer and grabbing four rebounds.

- The Royals bench provided a significant boost, scoring 24 points.

- Freshman Kamara Mills added six points, shooting a perfect 2-for-2 from beyond the arc.

- Tamar Kopilevech chipped in four points and collected five rebounds in 13 minutes of action.

NOTABLE MOMENTS
Queens started strong with a 6-3 run in the first quarter, sparked by back-to-back three-point baskets from Magda Freire and Aylesha Wade. FGCU took control late in the first quarter and never looked back, extending their lead to as much as 34 points in the third. The Royals best scoring period came in the fourth quarter, outscoring FGCU 20-11.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Royals struggled offensively, shooting 33.8 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from three-point range, compared to FGCU 44.1 percent overall and 36.0 percent from deep.

- FGCU finished 20-31 at the charity stripe, making 17 attempts in the first half.

- Despite losing the battle of the boards, Queens collected 14 offensive boards, leading to seven second-chance points.

- Queens committed 15 turnovers, leading to 20 FGCU points.

NEXT UP
Queens will take a short ride up from Fort Myers to DeLand, Fla. to take on Stetson on Saturday, Jan. 4. The Royals and Hatters are set to face each other for the fourth time in the series history. Stetson won both meetings last season, pulling out a 73-71 in the first meeting in DeLand, and later on the year leaving Curry Arena with a 62-44 road victory. Tipoff in Insight Credit Union Arena is set for 2 PM.
