CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Queens University of Charlotte women's volleyball team heads to their second home tournament this weekend — The Queen City Invitational, co-hosted by UNC Charlotte.
For the five-match tournament, live coverage will be available for all matches on StatBroadcast and on ESPN Plus.
OPENING SERVE: The Royals finished up the Queens Fall Classic going 1-2 with an opening win over William & Mary, a team that came into the Queen City with a 3-3 record. Queens then fought Davidson and USC Upstate in back-to-back five-set thrillers, including double-double performances from Anna Grace Sparks and a 14-block weekend for Kayla McDuffie.
LAST TIME OUT
- Against William & Mary: Sparks finished with 16 kills against the Tribe, while Kayla McDuffie (11 kills, .381 hitting), and Jordyn Johnson (13 kills) aided the offense in the victory. Despite taking a third-set loss by a score of 25-9, the Royals rallied in the fourth set. Queens hit .382 as a team in this set and applied pressure at the net with nine blocks in total for the match.
- Against Davidson: Davidson took home the first two sets in convincing fashion, but Queens crawled back with a vengeance in the third, winning 25-18. The Royals squad posted 15 kills with a .239 hitting percentage, their highest of the match. Kayla McDuffie and Alleigh Johnson led the way on offense, and Queens' defense tightened — holding Davidson to just .105 hitting. The fourth also went the Royals way, as Queens executed their attack with a .324 hitting percentage. The Wildcats would just barely take home the fifth set with the help of outside hitter Isabel Decker.
- Against USC Upstate: USC Upstate was able to take the win inside the Levine Center in five sets. McDuffie led the defense with five blocks, and the Royals added a season-high eight aces in the battle.
