CHARLOTTE, N.C. – On a beautiful Sunday afternoon in the Queen City, the Queens University of Charlotte women's soccer team saw
Madeline Cheatham and
Sejla Podzic find the back of the net for their first goals of the season as Queens took down Winthrop, 2-0. Prior to the match, the Royals celebrated their 2024 senior class.

TURNING POINT
Queens put pressure on the visiting Eagles from the opening kick as the Royals earned a penalty kick at the five-minute mark.
Sophia Muetterties drew a foul in the box and allowed sophomore
Madeline Cheatham to put away the opportunity for the early 1-0 lead. Midway through the second half, the Royals added a key insurance goal as
Girah Durant sent a beautiful touch to
Sejla Podzic at the top of the box where the junior finished the opportunity in the bottom left corner.
KEY STATS & NOTES
- Sophomore Madeline Cheatham netted her first collegiate goal in the early minutes. The Chesterfield, Virginia native finished with a shot on 46 minutes of action.
- Making her third appearance for the blue and gold, junior Sejla Podzic found the back of the net for the first time this season with a beautiful strike to the bottom left corner of the cage. Senior Girah Durant set up the insurance goal for her third career assist and second of the season.
- Junior Kelsey Jargstorf earned her fifth start of the season between the pipes and posted her second clean sheet. The Meridian, Idaho native faced nine shots, but only one on target.
- Senior Maddy Leone turned in a three-shot effort marking a season-high. Leone has put a shot on frame in the last three outings.
- Defender Savannah Stuart and midfielder Juliana Hunter added a pair of shots for the Royals, including one on the frame from each. Sophomore Laney Newnam rounded out the attack with a shot on goal across 52 minutes of work.
- Queens outshot the visiting Eagles 11-9 on the day marking the second time this season the Royals have outshot their opposition. The Royals were opportunistic earning seven corner kicks, including six in the second half.
- Three Royals, including Kelsey Jargstorf, Savannah Stuart, and Sarah Kelley turned in complete games.

The Royals will hit the road for a four-game road swing beginning at Michigan State on Thursday, September 5
th. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. from East Lansing, Michigan. Following the midweek match, Queens will head to Ball State for a Sunday showdown on September 8
th.
