ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Queens University of Charlotte women's rugby team opened their 2024 season with a 40-7 win over Navy on the road.
TURNING POINT
The Royals controlled possession and territory in the early stages and dominated the contact area which resulted in an early try. Continued pressure followed resulting in Queens' second try being scored. Towards the end of the first half, Navy changed the momentum and spent most of the final 10 minutes of the half in the Queens red zone. However, valiant defending from the Royals ensured no points were conceded. After a good drive up the field,
Mikaela Hall powered over the line to get a try leading the Royals to a 21-0 lead at the break.
The second half started once again with Queens dominating possession. A misplaced kick from Navy led to some wonderful offloads from
Abby Beaver and
Jay Stone, which resulted in
Salome Schmitt crashing onto the ball and diving over for a try. Queens then took advantage of a penalty to score their next try before Navy finally got on the board. With time ticking off the clock, Queens found their final try of the day in the last two minutes of regulation to give the game its final score.
