The Short Story:Â Despite multi-hit performances from
Matthew Corlew and
Zach Weston, the Queens University of Charlotte baseball team dropped the series opener with Stetson on Friday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Stetson jumped on the board first with a pair of runs in the first inning. Following a leadoff walk, Queens starter
Carson Magill retired the next two Hatters via fly outs. However, the visitors went to work as Logan Hughes sent an RBI single down the left field line to plate the first run. A two-out walk brought up Lorenzo Meola who sent an RBI single to center field to cap off the Hatters two run inning.
-Queens answered in the bottom of the first inning when
Matthew Corlew blasted a solo home run to right center.
-The Hatters responded in the second with five runs on two hits and one Royals error. Stetson capitalized on three walks and a hit-by-pitch to extend their lead to 7-1.
-Stetson added four more runs in the fourth inning with four hits. The scoring was capped off by an RBI single from Kyles Jones to give the visitors an 11-1 advantage.
-Queens responded in the bottom half of the fourth with two runs on three hits.
Nick Alderfer got the frame started with a double to right center before
Will Budnick singled to left field putting runners on the corners.
Tyler Peters delivered a clutch double down the right field line to plate Alderfer before a sacrifice fly from
Mason Kelly capped off the scoring.

BY THE NUMBERS
-Senior
Matthew Corlew turned in his ninth multi-hit performance of the year which included his sixth home run. The Lake Worth, Florida native finished 3-for-5 with an RBI.
-Senior
Zach Weston notched his 10
th multi-hit outing, including his third straight with a 2-for-5 game.
-
Nick Alderfer and
Will Budnick each roped a double on the night. The double was Alderfer's fifth of the season while Budnick recorded his ninth of the year.
-
Jake Barbour,
Dillon Lewis,
Tyler Cotto, and
Tyler Peters rounded out the offense with a hit.
-Right-handed reliever
Johnny Joseph put together a pair of scoreless frames. The freshman tossed 2.2 innings allowing just one hit while striking out a pair of Hatters.
-
Jack Brooker twirled 2.0 scoreless innings of relief while fanning two Hatters.
-On the night, the Royals pitching staff issued 13 walks which Stetson capitalized on with a .353 batting average with runners in scoring position.
-The Royals struggled defensively committing four errors which were the most since March 17
th against North Florida.

Queens and Stetson will return to action tomorrow, May 11
th at 2:00 p.m. for game two of the weekend series. Prior to the game, the Royals will honor their 2024 senior class beginning at 1:30 p.m. Admission is free and the game will be streamed on ESPN Plus.
