Queens Drops Rubber Match at Lipscomb on Sunday

The Short Story: The Queens University of Charlotte baseball team dropped the weekend rubber match at Lipscomb on Sunday afternoon as the Bisons plated 12 runs over the final three innings to clinch the series.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Lipscomb jumped on the board first with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Alex Vergara led off the inning with a double down the left field line before advancing to third on a timely ground out to first base. Trace Willhoite followed it up with a sacrifice fly to right field for the 1-0 lead.
-After being held scoreless for the first four innings, the Royals broke through in the fifth as Will Budnick belted a solo home run to right center.
-The Bisons would recapture the lead in the bottom of the fifth. D Coppedge roped a one-out double down the left field line to get into scoring position. _ Hetherington sent a deep fly ball to the right field corner which was caught allowing Coppedge to advance to third. However, the throw in got away and Coppedge took off for home which the Royals infield sent a laser to catcher Tyler Cotto who caught it and placed the tag. Upon further review, the umpires ruled Cotto was blocking the plate before receiving the ball, and the runner was ruled safe.
-Lipscomb would open the game up in the sixth with six runs on three hits and a Queens error. The Bisons capitalized on four free passes with timely hits to plate six runs.
-Queens responded immediately in the top of the seventh with three runs on three hits. The Royals did their damage with two outs as Mason Kelly started the rally with a single to left field. Andrew McDermott worked a walk before Dillon Lewis roped an RBI double to left field. With runners in scoring position, Jake Barbour followed it up with a two-run single to left center to cut the deficit to 8-4.
-Lipscomb blew the game open in the bottom of the seventh with four more runs. The Bisons capitalized on three hit-by-pitches, two walks, and two wild pitches to grab a 12-4 lead.
-The Bisons would plate two more runs in the eighth inning to walk it off 14-4. Following a fielder's choice, Lipscomb ripped a double to put runners in scoring position before a two-run single ended the game.

BY THE NUMBERS
-Tyler Cotto turned in a solid 2-for-3 day at the plate, including his sixth double of the season. The Goodyear, Arizona native has reached base multiple times in 14 games this season and is riding a four-game hitting streak.
-Mason Kelly turned in his second multi-hit outing of the season with a 2-for-3 day. The graduate student has a hit in five straight games.
-Junior Will Budnick blasted his sixth homer of the year.
-Jake Barbour and Dillon Lewis rounded out the offense with a hit each. Lewis extended his on-base streak to 16 straight games with a double in the seventh inning.
-Queens starter Jack Renaud got the ball in his second collegiate start. The freshman twirled 5.1 innings and surrendered five runs across six hits.
 
NEXT UP
Queens will continue their road stretch on Tuesday, April 9th when they travel to High Point University. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPN Plus.
