Queens Knocks Season-High 19 Hits Behind Six Multi-Hit Performances at Davidson

The Short Story: Despite lacing a season-high 19 hits, the Queens University of Charlotte baseball team fell in a high-scoring shootout at Davidson 15-11 on Tuesday night.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Wildcats offense exploded for five runs in the first inning. Davidson led off the inning with a leadoff home run before an RBI double gave them a quick 2-0 lead. Davidson would tack on two more runs before scoring their fifth run on a passed ball.
-The Royals would immediately respond in the second inning with three runs of their own to trim the Davidson deficit to two runs. After a leadoff walk by Matthew Corlew, Will Budnick belted a home run over the right field fence to score the Royals first runs of the game. Mattew Suppa would hit an RBI single later in the inning to trim the deficit to 5-3.
-Davidson would immediately respond in the bottom half of the inning with five more runs of their own. The Royals surrendered two walks and then an RBI single to allow the first run to cross. Then, a hit-by pitch would load the bases with two outs before a grand slam by Davidson gave them a commanding 10-3 lead.
-Davidson would add on another run in the fourth with a solo home run as they stretched their lead to 11-3.
-The home run fest would continue in the fifth inning as a single by Dillon Lewis and a Tyler Cotto walk created a scoring threat for the Royals. Matthew Corlew would take full advantage as he blasted a three-run home run to trim the deficit to 11-6.
-A walk, a base hit, and another walk loaded the bases for Davidson in the bottom half of the fifth. The Wildcats would take advantage with a two-run infield single extending the Davidson lead to 13-6.
-The Royals offense would continue to respond as they pushed across four runs in the sixth on six hits. Will Budnick, Tyler Cotto, Dillon Lewis, and Tyler Peters all had RBI singles as the Royals offense kept Queens in the contest.
-Davidson would belt a solo home run in the bottom half of the inning to take a 14-10 lead. In the next inning, Davidson hit another solo blast to extend their lead to 15-10 heading into the final two frames.
-The Royals put up a valiant effort in the final frame as Connor Manco came into pinch hit before blasting a 1-1 fastball over the right field fence. Dillon Lewis would then reach on a single before the Wildcats turned to their closer who would retire three straight Royals to seal the victory.
BY THE NUMBERS
-The Royals recorded a season-high 19 hits on the season, including five extra base hits with three home runs and two doubles.
-Dillon Lewis, Tyler Cotto, Will Budnick, Tyler Peters, Matt Suppa and Jake Barbour all had multi-hit performances for the Royals. Lewis had four base hits to lead the way as the Charlotte native has reached safely in 13 straight games, including five straight multi-hit games.
-Senior Tyler Peters is rounding into form offensively knocking a hit in six of the last seven games.
-Matthew Corlew, Will Budnick, Connor Manco each had home runs on the evening for the Royals.
-The Royals pitching staff will look to bounce back after allowing 15 runs on 11 hits and nine walks.
-Davidson surged to victory behind five home runs on the night.
 
NEXT UP
Queens will head west this weekend for a three-game series in Nashville at Lipscomb University. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET on Friday, April 5. The game will be broadcast on ESPN Plus.
