Men's Rugby Rides Dominant Start to Victory over Southern Virginia

CHARLOTTE, N.C.- Following a setback against Navy last weekend, the Queens University of Charlotte men's rugby team won 52-28 against Southern Virginia. With the win, the Royals improve to 3-1 on the season while the Knights fall to 1-3.

What Happened?

The Royals scored three times in the first 10 minutes to take a 19-0 lead before Southern Virginia had their first real scoring opportunity. From there, both teams traded scores over the final 30 minutes of the first half which included several turnovers on each side. At halftime, the Royals held a 33-14 lead after failing to finish a potential scoring drive in the closing seconds.

Both teams had quiet beginnings to the second half as neither team scored for the first 11 minutes until the Royals beat the Knights in a scrum near the goal line which led to a score to improve their lead to 38-14. Another score for the Royals with 20 minutes left was immediately followed by a score from the Knights which made the score 45-21 with 17 minutes left. Each team would finish the match with a score each in the final 10 minutes.

From Coach McKinney
"Good win heading into the bye week but there is more to improve on."
