Women's Soccer Falls in Conference Opener Against Central Arkansas

 The Queens University of Charlotte women's soccer team began ASUN conference play with a 1-0 loss to the Central Arkansas Bears. Despite the loss, the Royals created multiple scoring opportunities with 14 shots (six on goal) and five corner kicks. The Bears held possession for 55% of the match to the Royals' 45%. The Bears improve to 1-0-0 in conference play while the Royals fall to 0-1-0.

Turning Point

After the match remained scoreless for the first 63 minutes, Central Arkansas attempted a corner kick in the 64th minute. After the initial kick was deflected out by Queens, UCA midfielder Sydney Brough received the deflection and shot it past goalkeeper Erica Turner to give the Bears a 1-0 lead. Despite several offensive attacks late in the match, the Royals were unable to respond and lost by that score.

  • Senior Girah Durant got her first shot of the season in the fifth minute. This was Durant's fifth game and second start of the season as she played a season high 59 minutes

  • Hilda Svensson set a season high with three shots along with one shot on goal. The graduate student from Herrljunga, Sweden played all 90 minutes for the sixth time this season

  • Forward Maddy Leone led the Royals with four shots and two shots on goal. It was her second consecutive game with multiple shots on goal

  • Goalkeeper Erica Turner had six saves while playing all 90 minutes

  • Midfielder Sophia Muetterties had three shots as well as one shot on goal

  • In 78 minutes, Katie Purnell had one shot and one shot on goal

  • The Royals had 90 minute performances from Svensson, Grace Sain, Savannah Stuart, Annika Wilker, Muetterties, and Chelsea Devettori

The Royals travel to Florence, Alabama for a battle with the North Alabama Lions for the first road game of the conference season on Sunday, September 17th at 2:00 PM. Last season, the Royals defeated the Lions 1-0 at Dickson Field off of a 74th minute goal from Sophia Muetterties. Queens returns home next Thursday, September 21st against the Eastern Kentucky Colonels.
