The Short Story: The Queens University of Charlotte baseball team had their five-game winning streak snapped on Wednesday night in a scoring shootout with USC Upstate.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Royals would jump on the Spartans with a crooked five-run second inning. Queens recorded six hits, including three extra-base hits in the inning. Nick Brassington started the inning with a leadoff double before Tyler Peters singled to the pitcher which advanced Brassington to third. A safety squeeze from Andrew McDermott would plate Brassington for the first run of the game. Nick Melton would follow it up with an RBI single to center field before swiping second base. Zach Weston laced an RBI double into left-center bringing Melton home for a 3-0 lead. After advancing to second on a wild pitch, Weston would score on a double down the left-field line from Riley Cheek. Dillon Lewis would cap off the inning with an RBI single to left field bringing Cheek home to score.
-USC Upstate would answer in the bottom of the second inning with four runs on two hits and one Royals error. The inning was highlighted by a three-run home run from Grant Sherrod.
-Queens would get two of those runs back in the top half of the third inning. Nick Brassington was hit by a pitch to start the inning before Tyler Peters ripped a one-out single through the left side. Andrew McDermott would follow it up with an RBI single up the middle. Nick Melton would extend the lead to 7-4 with an RBI sacrifice bunt.
-Upstate would manufacture a run in the bottom of the fourth to grab an 8-7 lead. Kyle Henington recorded a sacrifice fly to bring across the go-ahead run
-The Spartans would add a pair of insurance runs in the fifth behind four hits and an error to extend their lead to 10-7.
-Upstate would add four insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth extending their lead to 14-7.
BY THE NUMBERS
-Eight different Royals recorded a hit on the evening, including Zach Weston, Riley Cheek, Dillon Lewis, Nick Brassington, Christian Maggio, Tyler Peters, Andrew McDermott, and Nick Melton.
-Tyler Peters led the offense with a 2-for-3 performance, including two runs scored. Peters has recorded a hit in five of the last six games.
-Riley Cheek laced his team-leading 28th extra-base hit with a double. Zach Weston has reached safely in six of the last seven games while Nick Brassington has been aboard in the last five outings.
-Kei Yamagishi made his 15th appearance on the season and worked a pair of clean innings.
-The 17 hits from Upstate were the fifth most by an opponent this season. Five Spartans turned in multi-hit performances.
