CHARLOTTE, N.C. – For the fourth consecutive season, the Queens University of Charlotte student-athlete population has recorded above a 3.3 GPA posting a 3.37 for the 2022-23 season. It is also the 12
th straight year that the department has recorded above a 3.0 GPA as 455 athletes earned a 3.0 or higher as they continue to excel in the classroom and competition.
"We celebrated many firsts in our transition from Division 2 to Division 1," said Director of Athletics Cherie Swarthout. "We watched the Royals rise on the field, court, pitch, diamond, and in the pool while maintaining academic excellence throughout the year. We have never lost focus on what is important, and our efforts are validated through our results in all three areas."
In total, 381 student-athletes were named to the Royals Athletic Director's Honor Roll for holding a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher. Of those recognized on the AD Honor Roll, 174 student-athletes achieved a 3.7 GPA or higher for the academic year giving them Athletic Gold Standard. Sixty-four student-athletes recorded a perfect 4.0 GPA for the academic year earning a place in the Athletic Royal Society. Together, the Royals programs had 137 graduates walk across the stage at this spring's commencement ceremony.
For the second straight year, the women's triathlon teams turned in the highest GPAs amongst teams. The club squad recorded a 3.94 GPA while the NCAA program finished with a 3.75 mark. The women's swimming program followed closely behind with a 3.72 GPA while the women's volleyball program notched a 3.66 mark. On the men's side, tennis led all programs with a 3.66 GPA. The men's triathlon program finished second with a 3.55 mark while cross country and track and field were close behind at 3.54.
Individually, Queens' Riley Cheek brought home the 2023 ASUN Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year recognition becoming the first in Queens Athletics history. 43 Royals were named College Sports Communicators Academic All-District while six Royals landed ASUN All-Academic Team honors.
During the 2022-23 season, the Queens women's rugby team captured their first NIRA Championship while the Royals club triathlon team won their third straight USAT Collegiate Club National Championship. Altogether, the Royals made 14 appearances in postseason play, including eight appearances in the ASUN Tournament.
