CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Looking to get back in the win column, Queens men's volleyball had their second match in as many days, taking on Lewis University. As they have all season, they continue to push their opponents to close set, however, Lewis managed to take it in 3-0 fashion (31-29, 25-21, 25-15).
MATCH SUMMARY
The first set kept the fans on their toes as both teams would scratch and claw for each point. After trailing 8-6 early, a kill by
Nathan Vaupel capped off a three-point run that put Queens ahead, 9-8. Later in the set, Lewis had a strong push that saw them take a 23-21 lead, however Queens would not waiver as they'd take four of the next five points and face a 25-24 set point. The Flyers took the proceeding two points and faced set point themselves, until a kill by
Matthew Pilch would knot the set at 26. Each team would split the next six points to find the set tied at 29, before a strong two-point finish by Lewis helped them claim the first set.
The Flyers put the Royals in a hefty deficit in the second set, finding themselves down 15-8 at the break. Out of the media timeout, Queens was able to gain some momentum, taking seven of the next 11 points. Down 23-17,
Riley Mulkey got it going on the offensive side with back-to-back-to-back kills to bring the Royals within three. Lewis responded well and would close out the set, 25-21.
Jack Brinkman, who has been hot as of late, put away a kill and combined on a double-block that cut Queens' early deficit to one, 9-8. Lewis put together their strongest run of the set, taking 11 of the next 13 points and pushing the lead to 20-10.
Daniel Leitao managed a kill and an ace late but the Flyers would hold on to take the set, and ultimately the match.Â
COACH'S WORDS
"We had a very solid offensive performance tonight" said head coach
Jeremy Price. "
Brian Schwob did a nice job of running the offense. Unfortunately, we lost the serving battle against a very good serving team. I give Lewis a lot of credit as they hit really tough serves in big moments."
