The Short Story:Â Senior Daniel Bagwell tossed 8.2 flawless innings in his first Division 1 start as the Queens baseball team dropped an extra-inning affair with #12 East Carolina on Tuesday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Royals plated first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning following a one-out triple from Riley Cheek. Nick Brassington would bring Cheek home with an infield groundout.
-Queens would add another run in the second inning as they jumped on the nationally ranked Pirates early. Dillon Lewis led off the inning with a double to right field before Tyler Peters laced a two-out RBI single up the middle.
-East Carolina would plate their first run in the fourth inning with a one-out sacrifice fly from Jacob Jenkins-Cowart.
-Neither offense could produce in the middle innings as both pitching staffs managed to execute timely pitches in critical situations.
-With two outs and runners in scoring position in the top of the ninth, Alec Makarewicz delivered an RBI single for the Pirates to keep their hopes alive. Justin Offschanka would take over for Daniel Bagwell and pick up an impressive strikeout to keep the score tied 2-2.
-The Pirates would open the scoring in extra innings as they plated three runs on five hits. Queens would see eight pitches in the bottom half and secure the victory with a strikeout.
BY THE NUMBERS
-Daniel Bagwell hurled a season-best 8.2 innings in his first Division 1 start. The Kings Mountain native surrendered two runs to the nationally ranked Pirates while fanning seven hitters.
-Riley Cheek extended his hitting streak to eight games with a triple in the first inning. The extra-base hit also increased his season total to nine which leads the program.
-Nick Brassington posted a 1-for-4 night at the plate and drove in his fifth RBI of the season.
-Sophomore Dillon Lewis reached base safely in the fourth straight game with a double.
-Tyler Peters ripped his fourth RBI of the season with a single in the second inning.
-The Royals played in front of a rocking 2,485 fans at Atrium Health Ballpark as a part of their college baseball series.
NEXT UP
The Royals will return to the diamond on Friday, March 11th when they welcome UNC Greensboro to the Tuck. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. The final two games of the series will be played on Saturday and Sunday at UNC Greensboro.
