CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Queens welcomed Alderson Broaddus into Curry Arena Thursday evening in search of its third-straight victory. The Royals received contributions from all over and were hot from start to finish to earn their 11th win on the season, 3-0 (25-12, 25-17, 25-19).
In his first start of the season,
Sev Allton got off to a hot start with three kills in the early going to propel Queens to an early 11-5 lead. After taking a 17-9 lead off the hand of
Ryan Cymbor, Allton stepped behind the service line and served three consecutive aces to put Queens ahead 20-9. Allton's fourth kill of the set clinched a 25-12 first-set victory for Queens.
Allton and Cymbor carried over their strong starts to the second set, as an ace and a kill on consecutive points by Allton was followed with a pair of kills by Cymbor. The set was close early on, but a
Ananias Hayes contributed a couple kills that help Queens grow its lead, 13-10. Leading 21-14,
Michael Sacha subbed in and would earn his first pair of kills on the season, the second of which gave the Royals set point before a kill by Allton would help them take the second set, 25-17.
Queens wrapped things up in the third set, as a three-point run near the midway point put them ahead, 11-8. After Alderson Broaddus knotted the set at 12, a kill by Hayes sparked a five-point run that put the Royals ahead, 17-12. The Battlers clawed their way back in the set and brought the score within one, but a kill by Cymbor jolted Queens to four consecutive points that put Queens at 23, before Allton's sixth and final ace clinched the set and ultimately the match.
COACH'S WORDS
"That was a really fun match for our team", said head coach
Jeremy Price. "We got to play guys who hadn't played a lot or at all, specifically
Sev Allton, who waited a long time for this opportunity and really came up big for us. He came in and did a great job both attacking and serving; we'd seen flashes of this in practice so it wasn't necessarily surprising but was nice to see in a real match setting.
Ryan Cymbor and
Brian Camacho, who also hadn't played much, also made awesome contributions on offense and I'm really proud of the way they stepped in".
BY THE NUMBERS
- In his first career start, Sev Allton showed a lot of promise, putting away match-high 12 kills while adding match-high six aces.
