The Short Story:Â The Queens University of Charlotte baseball team dropped the weekend rubber match with the visiting Lipscomb Bisons.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Lipscomb would strike first in the top of the second inning with three runs on one hit and two Royals errors.
-The visiting Bisons added a pair in the fifth inning with two hits and a third Royals error. With a runner on third and one out, Mason Lundgrin hit a sacrifice fly to center field before Trace Willhoite belted a solo home run to left field.
-Queens saw their best scoring opportunity shut down in the fifth inning. Zach Weston led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch before Tyler Peters worked a one-out walk. JD Coleman would line out to center field and a fielder's choice would end the inning.
-Lipscomb managed to add two more in the eighth inning as Austin Kelly delivered a two-run home run to left field.
-The Bisons would add an insurance run in the ninth inning following a one-out double from Mason Lundgrin. Lundgrin would advance to third on a wild pitch before scoring on an infield ground out.

BY THE NUMBERS
-Royals starter Zach Kelly fell to 0-4 on the season after tossing a season-high 5.0 innings, surrendering three earned runs, and striking out four Bisons.
-Joseph Rodriguez worked 3.0 innings of relief while striking out a pair.
-Sophomore Benjamin Bartilson III made his first appearance for the Royals. The West Virginia native tossed 1.0 inning and allowed a run.
-Riley Cheek would break the no-hit bid with two outs in the bottom of the ninth with a single into left field. The senior has reached base safely in 21-of-23 games this season.
-The Royals committed three errors on the afternoon marking the fifth straight game with a defensive misplay.
-The last time the Royals were held to one hit in a game was March 20, 2021.
-Lipscomb starting pitcher Noah Thompson tossed a complete game shutout and struck out 10 batters.
NEXT UP
The Royals will continue their homestand on Tuesday, March 28th when they welcome Winthrop University to The Stick. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Following the game, Queens will host Appalachian State on Wednesday, March 29th at Truist Field in Uptown.
