Riley Cheek Rips Six Hits as Royals and Spartans Wrap Up Weekend Series on Saturday Afternoon

FIRST PITCH (GAME 1)

The Short Story: The Queens University of Charlotte baseball team dropped game two of the weekend series against UNC Greensboro.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Queens wasted no time jumping on the Spartans with four runs on three hits in the top of the first inning. The Royals capitalized on four walks in the inning. Riley Cheek laced a one-out single into left field before Dillon Lewis and Will Budnick worked consecutive walks. A wild pitch would advance the runners up and bring Cheek in to score the first run. JJ Sousa would work a walk before Colin Gross smoked a two-run double into right field. JD Coleman would extend the Royals lead to 4-0 with an RBI single to second base.
-UNC Greensboro would respond in the bottom half of the first inning with two runs on two hits and one error.
-The Spartans would grab the lead in the second inning as they plated six runs on four hits. The Royals committed three errors on the inning which UNCG capitalized on.
-Queens answered in the top of the third inning with a run as they took advantage of an error. Colin Gross led off the inning and reached second on a throwing error. JD Coleman grounded out to second base advancing Gross to third. Tyler Peters would bring Gross in with a groundout as they cut the deficit to 8-5.
-The Royals added another run in the fifth inning as JD Coleman ripped a two-out single into left field bringing around JJ Sousa.
-UNCG countered with a pair in the bottom half of the fifth with two runs to extend their lead to 10-6. With two outs and a runner on third, Zack Budzik laced an RBI double. Mitchell Smith followed with an RBI single to left field.
-After getting two quick outs in the sixth inning, the Spartans manufactured three runs. GC Jarman singled up the middle, stole second, and Jeremy Wolf ripped an RBI single to center field. Wolf would advance to second on a passed ball before Bradley Bott singled through the right side for an RBI. Zack Budzik would add on with a flare into right field that couldn't be tracked down.
-UNCG managed to plate seven runs over the final three innings while the Royals added one run in the ninth.

BY THE NUMBERS
-Riley Cheek extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a 4-for-5 game, including a double.
-JD Coleman went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs in game one.
-Will Budnick, JJ Sousa, and Colin Gross recorded a hit on the day.
-The Royals have plated the first run in seven games this season.
-Queens got a runner on base in 8-of-9 innings.
-UNCG swiped six stolen bases which is the most by a Royals opponent this season, and second most in a single game in program history.
-The Spartans hit .417 with runners in scoring position and .556 with two outs.
-The 17 runs scored by the Spartans tied for the most runs surrendered in a single game.

The Short Story: Despite striking first in the scoring column, the Queens University of Charlotte baseball team dropped the weekend finale at UNC Greensboro by a final score of 10-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Royals struck first with a run in the second inning. Andrew McDermott and Tyler Peters worked back-to-back walks before Matt Riley ripped an RBI single through the left side scoring McDermott.
-The Spartans responded with a pair of runs on two hits in the second. With runners on first and second and two outs, Kennedy Jones tripled to right center bringing home both runners.
-UNCG extended their lead in the fourth with a two-run home run to left field from Rowan Watt.
-Queens responded in the fifth inning with two runs on two hits and one Spartan error. Tyler Peters opened the inning with a single before stealing second base. A Matt Riley fly out to center field would advance Peters up to third before Nick Brassington roped an RBI triple to left center. Riley Cheek would reach safely on an error that scored Brassington and cut the deficit to 4-3.
-The Spartans would tack on six runs in the sixth and seventh inning behind seven hits.
-Queens would add a run in the ninth after JJ Sousa and Tyler Peters opened the frame with back-to-back singles. Matt Riley would reach on a fielder's choice which brought Sousa around to score.

BY THE NUMBERS
-Riley Cheek extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a 2-for-5 performance.
-Tyler Peters turned in his third multi-hit performance of the season with a 2-for-3 evening.
-Nick Brassington, Dillon Lewis, JJ Sousa, and Matt Riley each posted a base hit on the night.
-Zach Kelly got the start for the Royals and tossed 4.0 innings and surrendered four runs while striking out six batters. The six punchouts were the most for Kelly since March 8, 2020.
-Marshall Pile and Justin Offschanka recorded scoreless relief appearances.
-The Spartans executed with runners in scoring position at a .400 clip while the Royals held a .167 mark.
-Queens suffered their second sweep of the season as they have lost six straight games.

The Royals will return home for a non-conference game on Tuesday, March 14th when they welcome UNC Asheville. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. from Tuckaseegee Dream Fields. Admission is free to the public.
