Royals Top Gardner-Webb for First NCAA DI Win

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's lacrosse team (1-3) picked up their first NCAA DI win this afternoon defeating Gardner-Webb (0-4), 15-10, on the road.
 
How It Happened
After scoring the first goal of the day, Queens found itself trailing 2-1 after back-to-back goals from the Runnin' Bulldogs. However, the Royals would answer with a three-goal push to take over control of the game. A pair of goals that stretched over the close of the first quarter and the opening of the second knotted the game at 4-4, but once again the Royals responded to take the lead for good on a goal from Shannon Kingston at 9:42 in the second. Queens led by as much as five goals before the final horn sounded.

  • Senior attacker Caroline Pearce recorded a career-high six goals to lead the Royals to victory.
  • Senior midfielder Shannon Kingston added four goals and four draw controls.
  • Freshman attacker Kayleen Favreau added two goals while Senior attacker Colby Dugdale and sophomore midfielder Jordan Tandler each scored their first goals of the season. Sophomore attacker Alexi Flores notched one goal and one assist.
  • Freshman attacker Jillian Gironda tallied three assists to lead all on the field in the category.
  • On the defensive end, Grace Guglielmo totaled five draw controls and three caused turnovers.
  • Junior goalkeeper Caroline Kraemer tallied today's win in goal after recording four saves in 30 minutes of action. Sharn Muffett totaled five saves in 30 minutes of action.
  • Danielle Burke took the loss in goal for Gardner-Webb after recording eight saves.
  • Bria Foley led the Runnin' Bulldogs with three goals and one assist.
  • Queens outshot Gardner-Webb, 33-26, putting 23 shots on goal compared to the Runnin' Bulldogs' 19 shots on goal.
  • Queens also won the battle for ground balls, 15-14, but was edged at the draw, 15-14.
  • Today's win was the first career win for Queens Head Women's Lacrosse Coach Kelly McQuilkin

Gardner Webb challenged us hard on both sides of the field, especially on the draw circle. I'm proud of the way my team fought and problem solved throughout the game to get this first win under our belt. We're going to celebrate our first DI win this evening and get back out on the field early tomorrow to prep for Saturday."
