Men's Soccer Battles in ASUN Tournament against Central Arkansas

NASHVILLE, TENN- The Queens University of Charlotte men's soccer team competed in their first-ever ASUN tournament match Saturday evening as they took on Central Arkansas in the quarterfinals. The Royals fell in a hard-fought matchup to the Bears 1-0 as Queens finished the season 5-10-2 overall and 4-4 in conference play. Central Arkansas improves to 4-8-4 overall with a 3-2-3 conference record and advanced to take on top-seeded Lipscomb on Monday night.

Turning Point 

The only goal in the match occurred in the 32nd minute when Sohma Ichikawa sailed a corner kick to Deon Travis for Central Arkansas to take a 1-0 lead. The Royals had some scoring opportunities to tie the match in the second half but unfortunately could not convert on any of them. The best scoring opportunity came in the 58th minute when Giuliano Lucca got past several Bears defenders and had a one-on-one chance with the goalkeeper before missing the shot high. In this same sequence, Michel Feldman also had a scoring opportunity as his shot sailed left of goalkeeper Javier Ramirez. 

Key Stats & Notes

  • Giuliano Lucca led the way offensively for the Royals with four shots and two shots on goal. The four shots matched a season-high for the senior.

  • Freshman Evan Morris had a strong game in goal with seven saves and only one goal allowed. The seven saves are tied for second-most in his young career. Morris finished his first season in the Queen City with 55 saves, including 24 in league play.

  • Cole Pumpian recorded one shot and one shot on goal marking the fifth straight match the freshman has posted a shot.

  • Michel Feldman recorded two shot attempts across 77 minutes of action.

  • Ciro Bourlot Jaeggi and Gaston Moise each recorded one shot attempt to round out the Royals offense.

  • Defensively, Samuel Idinge, Pantelis Panteli, and Oskar Wolf each played all 90 minutes.

  • Central Arkansas controlled the offense winning the shooting margin 22-9. The shot differential was the third largest of the season.

The loss concluded the Royals historic 2023 season while Central Arkansas will advance to the ASUN Tournament Semifinals on Monday night.
