Muetterties Late Goal Leads Royals Past North Alabama for Queens First D1 Victory at Home

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's soccer team (2-5-4 overall, 2-2-1) picked up their second straight victory over the visiting North Alabama Lions (3-5-5 overall, 0-3-2 ASUN) by a final score of 1-0 on Thursday night. The shutout marks the fourth by the Royals backline this season as they secured the first home victory at the Division I level in Queens Athletics history.

Turning Point
The turning point of the evening proved to be the Royals ability to capitalize on their fourth corner kick of the second half. Hilda Svensson toed up a set piece in the corner and sent a beautiful touch to the back post and Sophia Muetterties snuck a header into the bottom left for the lone goal of the night.
 
Key Stats & Notes
  • Junior midfielder Sophia Muetterties scored her first goal of the season, and fifth career goal in the 73rd minute. The goal marks the fourth time this season that the Royals scored first, and the third straight match to do so. Muetterties finished with a season-best three shots and placed two on net.
  • Senior goalkeeper Erica Turner made her 63rd career start between the pipes for the Royals and turned in her 27th straight complete game. The Dublin, Ireland native picked up six saves which is third most this season.
  • Senior Hilda Svensson tallied her first assist of the season on the Muetterties goal.
  • Logan Farrelly and Nia Gaither ripped a pair of shots while Farrelly put both shots on goal. In the last two games, Farrelly has taken five shots across 105 minutes of action. For Gaither, the senior posted her seventh multi-shot performance this season as she leads the team in total shots and ranks top 10 in the league.
  • After being sidelined for the last six matches, sophomore Maddy Leone returned to the pitch and contributed 25 minutes off the bench with a shot.
  • Seven Royals played a full 90 minutes on the pitch, including Erica Turner, Hilda Svensson, Savannah Stuart, Morgan Reeb, Jada Palmer, Grace Guglielmo, and Sophia Muetterties. Daniela Calm also logged a season-high 62 minutes off the bench.
  • The Royals opportunities increased drastically in the second half as they won the corners battle 5-0 in the final 45 minutes.
  • Both offenses recorded 11 shots on the night while Queens put five on frame compared to the Lions seven. In the last two matches, the Royals offense has clicked to the tune of 29 total shots.
