Svensson Nets First Career Goal as Royals Draw at Kennesaw State

KENNESAW, GA. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's soccer team (0-5-4, 0-2-1) suffered a tough 1-1 draw on the road at Kennesaw State (3-5-2 overall, 0-1-1 ASUN) on Thursday night. Despite the draw, the Royals showed incredible growth and discipline as they controlled the entire match and led for 77 minutes. The last time the Royals had four draws in a season was back in 2007.

Turning Point
After leading for 77 minutes and controlling the tempo of the entire match, the Royals saw their lead dissipate when the Owls struck even on an own goal in the 87th minute. The Royals defense was looking to clear the ball back down field when miscommunication allowed a slow touch pass back at goal to sneak into net.

  • Senior Hilda Svensson got the scoring going early with her first career goal in the 10th minute. The early goal is the second time this season that the Royals jumped on the board first with the other game being at Morehead State.
  • Senior goalkeeper Erica Turner was flawless between the pipes facing 17 shots and picking up three saves. The Dublin, Ireland native continues to climb the career record book sitting third in total career saves with 241.
  • Nia Gaither recorded a shot in her third consecutive match. This season, the senior has posted a shot in 7-of-9 matches leading the Royals with 17 shots.
  • Freshman Savannah Stuart made her ninth start of the season and dished out her first career assist by setting up the Hilda Svensson goal. As a rookie, Stuart is third on the team in total minutes played behind Jada Palmer and Erica Turner.
  • Noelle Roberts sent her third shot of the season on target in the 37th minute remaining perfect in shots on goal this season.
  • Six Royals played a complete game, including Erica Turner, Morgan Reeb, Jada Palmer, Keely Jackson, Grace Guglielmo, and Sophia Muetterties.
  • The Owls won the shooting battle 15-9, but the Royals were efficient in their shot selection putting four on target to the Owls three.
  • Kennesaw State won the corner battle on the evening 5-2, but the Royals backline led by Jada Palmer was successful in limiting their open opportunities.

Queens will continue their trek west as they will face Jacksonville State on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 1:00 p.m. The Gamecocks enter the match with a 2-7 overall record and 0-1 mark in league play. Following the Sunday showdown, Queens will return to Charlotte on Thursday, Sept. 29 when they welcome North Alabama at 7:00 p.m.
