CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The top-ranked Queens University of Charlotte women's lacrosse team remains undefeated at 21-0 on the year after winning its third-straight NCAA DII Women's Lacrosse South Region Championship this afternoon. The Royals defeated No. 10 Florida Southern for the second time this year by a score of 16-13 to advance to the National Semifinals in Saint Charles, Missouri.
Super senior midfielder
Kyleigh Masteran led the Royals with six points on four goals and two assists while junior midfielder
Shannon Donovan added four goals. Senior attacker
Kaitlyn Hardin added a hat trick and one assist while super senior attacker
Rebecca Kinsley totaled one goal and three assists en route to setting a new single-season record in assists at Queens with 60 so far this year.
Queens found themselves trailing the Mocs, 3-0, early before a goal from
Shannon Kingston put the Royals on the board at 3:45 in the first.
Trailing 5-1 early in the second, a goal from Hardin with 11:45 on the clock got the Royals going. The two teams then traded goals, each scoring four, to give the game an 8-5 score at the break. Three of the Mocs' goals in the quarter were man-up as the Royals were plagued by yellow cards before the half.
Queens used a 3-2 push in the third quarter to pull within two, 10-8, of Florida Southern heading into the final 15 minutes of action. They then opened the fourth with three unanswered goals, taking their first lead of the day on a goal from Kinsley at 12:15. The Mocs pulled within one point twice before a 3-0 push from Queens in the closing minutes solidified their win allowing them to move on and continue their winningest season in program history.
Queens outshot the Mocs, 32-27, putting 23 shots on goal compared to Florida Southern's 24 shots on goal. The Royals also won the battle for ground balls but totaled just 15 draw controls to Florida Southern's 18.
Florida Southern was led by Abby McFerren who totaled five goals and one assist for six points in the loss. Haley Daleo added three goals and Lizzy Lynch totaled two goals and one assist. Patricia Werker took the loss in goal after totaling seven saves in 53:16.
Queens advances to the NCAA DII Women's Lacrosse National Semifinals for the third straight season with today's win. The semifinals will take place on Friday, May 20 followed by the national championship game on Sunday, May 22. Games will take place in Saint Charles, Missouri on the campus of Lindenwood University.
