2022 Queens Athletics Awards: Royal Service Award

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte Department of Athletics will host its annual awards ceremony honoring the accomplishments of its student-athletes in a virtual format through the Queens Athletics website and social media channels per usual this year. However, Royal Service Award and the Mark Kelso "Just Show Up" Award were presented at the 2022 Queens Student Awards Ceremony on Sunday, Apr. 26. 
 
For the 10th straight year, the presentation of awards are being sponsored by InterCon Building Corp. InterCon has been an outstanding sponsor for the Royals as their generosity helped support the building of Byrum Hall, the tennis courts, and the Queens Sports Complex.
 
Additional department awards will be released weekly during the month of June and early-July as Queens will announce winners of the Royals Sportsmanship Award, Male and Female Comeback Athletes of the Year, Pamela Davies Male and Female Scholar-Athletes of the Year, and the Male and Female Senior Athletes of the Year. There will also be awards presented for Team Comeback Wins of the Year, Team Upset Wins of the Year, Individual Championship Performances of Year, and Team Championship Performances of the Year.
 
Royal Service Award
 
Presented by the Department of Athletics to individual student-athletes or teams who have gone above and beyond to help improve the Queens community.  Criteria for this award includes acts of community engagement that are purposeful, progressive, deliberate, intentional, and impactful to the Queens campus and greater community.
 
Individual Male Winner – Zac Baker, Men's Swimming
 
Baker, a freshman swimmer, volunteered 235 hours during the year at 40 different events. Much of his time was spent volunteering at many triathlon events in various capacities. This included him serving as a volunteer coach to youth with the goal of helping the sport grow.

Individual Female Winner – Avery Marquis, Cheerleading
 
Marquis, a freshman cheerleader, volunteered 165 hours of her time at 49 different events during the academic year. She helped with the Light the Night event hosted by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and read to students at Myers Park Traditional on Reading day. She also served at many Queens events such as the Veterans Day Celebration and the MLK Service Event.
 
Team Winners – Men' Swimming and Women's Rugby
 
The men's swimming team recorded over 784 volunteer hours during the year with 78% of the team participating to average 25 hours per individual. They raised money for Swim Across America, helped with the management of Carolina Pool, put together Easter cards and chocolates for the Alliance Center for Education, and helped at many other events. They had a team impact score of 89 while the economic impact of their work was measured at over 22,000 dollars.

The women's rugby team recorded over 805 volunteer hours during the year with 86% of the team participating to average 13 hours per individual. The team spent a lot of time volunteering with St. Andrews Church, Room in the Inn, and Ourbridge to name a few. With a team impact score of 68, the economic impact of their work was measured at just under 23,000 dollars.
