CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Queens University of Charlotte softball team hosted the No. 13 Anderson University Trojans today at the Tuck, splitting the final conference doubleheader of the season. Queens shut out the Trojans in game one to win 6-0 before falling 7-4 in game two. Queens' record improved to 28-20 overall and 15-9 in South Atlantic Conference play while Anderson continues to lead the league at 36-6 on the year and 19-3 in conference play.
Game One: Queens 6 | Anderson 0
After three walks allowed the Royals to load the bases, Queens scored its first run of the day on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first.
Kayla Smith then brought the remaining baserunners home with a two-RBI single to left field to give the home team a 3-0 lead early.
Smith then stepped up to the plate to record a two-run homer over the center-field fence to put Queens on top 5-0 in third.
The last run of the game came from pinch-runner
Adriana Wilson in the bottom of the fifth.
Jordyn Thompson notched an RBI single to center field to plate Wilson from second base and give the game a 6-0 score which held until the seventh.
Smith, Thompson, and
Haley Hmiel went 2-of-3 from the plate. Smith led the Royals totaling four RBI while Thompson recorded one RBI.
Jordan Dunn pitched all seven innings, striking out five while allowing five hits and no runs. Dunn's record improved to 16-10 on the season.
Anderson's Laken Maxwell recorded the loss, making her record 19-4.
Game Two: Anderson 7 | Queens 4
Following a scoreless first inning,
Kaylee DeJesus got the Royals on the board in the second with a two-RBI double to right-center. Smith and Hunt recorded runs on the play.
Queens held on to the lead until the top of the fourth when Anderson answered back scoring two runs to tie the game 2-2.
After the Royals left three on base in the bottom of the fourth, Anderson continued to build upon their lead scoring five additional runs in the top of the fifth to give the game a 7-2 score.
Thompson's two-run blast in the bottom of the sixth would give the Royals their final runs of the day as the game ended with a 7-4 score.
Dunn took the loss in game two after pitching four innings and striking out three.
Haley Nelson pitched three innings.
Queens' final game of the regular season will be in Charlotte on Sunday, Apr 24 as they host Allen University for Senior Day. The doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m. with presentations scheduled for 12:45 p.m.
