CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte baseball team (25-19, 14-7 SAC) capped off their three-game weekend series victorious taking down the Anderson Trojans (21-20, 7-14 SAC) by a final score of 12-3 on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at the Tuck. The 12-run mark is the 15
th time this season that the Royals have plated 10 or more runs in a game as they remain top 30 in the country in runs scored. Prior to the game, the Royals celebrated their remarkable senior class and all of their accomplishments while starting the Royals program.
In the victory, Queens tied the program record for home runs in a game blasting five on the afternoon.
Riley Cheek set a new single game program record smoking three home runs on the day while
Dillon Lewis and
Tanner Jacobson each added one. The seven RBIs from Cheek is the most in a game in the program's young history.
Tanner Jacobson (5-2) also picked up the start of the mound for the Royals earning his fifth win of the season hurling 7.1 innings, surrendering a pair of hits, and two runs while striking out five Trojan hitters.
Anderson would get the scoring started early in the first inning. A one-out walk led to a strike out before Carlos Hernandez ripped a home run to center field. Following the early runs, Royals starter
Tanner Jacobson would settle in and retire the next eight Trojans in order.
The Royals would respond in the bottom of the second inning as
Mason Pickard got the bats going with a single to second base to open the inning. After the next two batters were retired,
Riley Cheek stepped in and laced his first home run of the day to right center tying the game 2-2.
Queens would erupt in the third inning bringing home six runs on five hits to grow their early lead to 8-2. A lead off single from
Nick Brassington would set up a
Dillon Lewis moonshot to center field. The home run was the freshman's sixth of the season.
Tanner Jacobson and
Matt Riley would both reach base on Trojan miscues before senior
Mason Pickard ripped an RBI single bringing around Jacobson to score. Anderson would pick up two critical outs before
Riley Cheek stepped in and blasted his second home run of the day to right field extending the lead to 8-2.
Anderson would find their first base runner in the fourth after being retired in order by Jacobson. Carlos Hernandez would reach on an error before a one-out walk put runners on first and second. Jacobson would remain poised and roll a ground ball for a 6-4-3 double play to work out of the jam. Looking to bring that momentum into the dugout, Jacobson would step into the box and smoke a one-out home run to left field for his fifth of the season, and second in as many games.
Jacobson would keep the Trojan bats at bay through the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings only surrendering a hit. The Royals would add onto their sizeable lead in the seventh capitalizing on three walks.
Nick Melton,
Riley Cheek, and
MJ Sasapan each drew a walk opening the inning before
Nick Brassington was hit by a pitch to bring Melton across. The Royals would get one more in the inning as
Dillon Lewis grounded out, but brought across Cheek.
In their final at bat of the afternoon,
Griffin Hughes would lead off the inning with a pinch hit single.
Mason Pickard would reach on a hit by pitch before
Broadus Roberson scored Hughes on a fielding error by Anderson. With two outs in the eighth,
Riley Cheek stepped in and blasted his third home run of the game to right field setting the new single game program record for home runs and RBIs in a game.
Justin Offschanka and
Jordan Briones would toss a combined 1.2 relief innings for the Royals. Offshanka would make quick work picking up a pair of outs following Jacobson's exit while Briones worked an inning with a strikeout.
Queens will return to action Tuesday, April 19 when they welcome Lenoir-Rhyne to the Tuck for a 2:00 p.m. start. The Bears were receiving votes in the latest NCBWA Top 25. Following the game, the Royals will travel to Gastonia on Wednesday, April 20 for a contest at Caromount Health Ballpark against No. 6 North Greenville University.
