Royals Set New Season Home Run Record in Series Sweep of UVA Wise

CHARLOTTE, N.C. –The Queens University of Charlotte softball team extended its winning streak to five after sweeping the UVA Wise Cavs this afternoon at the Tuck. The Royals took game one in eight innings, 3-2, before coming from behind to win game two in a thriller, 10-7. The Royals' record improves to 26-18 overall and 11-7 in the South Atlantic Conference while UVA Wise's record drops to 15-15 overall and 7-11 in conference.

Game One: Queens 3 | UVA Wise 2

The Royals would be first on the board as an Ashlyn Mickler RBI single allowed Kayla Smith to cross home plate. The Cavs answered back in the fifth and sixth innings when Emma McCauely scored a run and McKenna Falwell hit a home run.

UVA Wise held on to the one-run lead until freshman right fielder Kaylee DeJesus homered to tie the game 2-2.

The Royals would then seal the deal in the bottom of the eighth after holding the Cavs scoreless in the top. With the tiebreaker rule placing Jordan Hunt on second, Haley Hmiel executed a perfect sacrifice bunt to help her advance to third. Super senior Gerlea Patton then connected with the ball forcing the Cavs defense to try to tag Hunt out at home. However, Hunt was able to slide past UVA Wise's catcher to score the final run of the game.

Jordan Dunn pitched all eight innings to record the win and improve her record to 13-10. She also recorded a career-high 10 strikeouts.

Game Two: Queens 10 | UVA Wise 7

Queens found themselves trailing 5-1 heading into the bottom of the second after the Cavs scored three runs in the first and Jenna McDermott recorded a two RBI homer to center field in the top of the second. An RBI single for Patton would help the Royals close the gap to three, 5-2.

Both teams would score a run in the fourth giving the game a 6-3 score before an error by the Royals in the top of the sixth helped UVA Wise extend its lead to four 7-3.

In the bottom of the sixth, a grand slam from Haley Nelson would knot the game at 7-7. The home run was her 13th of the season and helped the Royals set a new season record for home runs at 41.

However, the Royals weren't finished yet as Dunn struck out three straight batters to retire the Cavs quickly in the top of the seventh. Hunt's three-run walk-off dinger then completed the series sweep.

Khristen McPherson and Dunn combined to strike out 11 batters in game two.

The Royals will be back in action on Friday, Apr. 15 taking on Tusculum University on the road. The doubleheader is set to begin at 2 p.m.
