No. 3 Queens Holds Off No. 13 Tampa to Move to 5-0

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The third-ranked Queens University of Charlotte women's lacrosse team faced No. 13 Tampa this morning in the first game of the Crown Lacrosse Classic, winning 10-9 over the Spartans to move to 5-0 on the season. The 5-0 start matches a program record for the Royals.

Rebecca Kinsley led the Royals with six points on four goals and two assists while Kyleigh Masteran added four points with three goals and one assist. In goal, Caroline Kraemer moved to 5-0 after totaling 10 saves.

After falling behind early, Queens' Shannon Kingston netted a goal at 7:50 in the first to tie the game at 1-1. Queens then scored four more unanswered goals to take a 4-1 lead into the second where each team scored once more to give the game a 5-2 score at the half.

The Spartans made their push in the third quarter outscoring the Royals 4-2 to close the margin to one, 7-6, heading into the final quarter of action.

Queens would score three unanswered goals in the third to increase the gap to four, 10-6, with 8:35 to play. However, the Spartans would respond with three of their own to make it a one-point game again, 10-9, with 3:21 to play. The Spartans then won the final draw of the game, but a turnover would return the ball to the Royals who controlled possession for much of the remaining time to secure today's win.

Queens edged Tampa, 32-31, in shots today putting 23 shots on goal compared to the Spartans' 19 shots on goal. Queens also won the battle at the draw, 13-9, and secured more ground balls, 21-18.

Cece Colombo, Brynn Nestor, and Emma McLoughlin each scored twice for the Spartans. Alex Walling took the loss in the cage after recording 13 saves.

Queens will remain in the Queen City for its next game against Palm Beach Atlantic on Friday, Mar. 11. The game is scheduled to begin at noon at Dickson Field.
