Royals Fall at Home to King on Saturday Afternoon

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's volleyball team (9-8, 3-1 IVA) fell on Saturday afternoon 3-0 to King University (7-9, 5-2 CC) inside Curry Arena. With the loss, the Royals three game winning streak was snapped as they are now 1-1 this season against King. The Tornado have now won their last three matches improving to 7-9 overall.
 
The afternoon opened tightly contested as neither team could grab a lead of more than three. Eventually, King would find their rhythm offensively and extend the lead to 18-13 forcing Royals Head Coach Jeremy Price into a timeout. Queens would come out of the timeout with a 3-1 push by capitalizing on three Tornado errors to bring the deficit to 19-17. The teams would exchange points the rest of the set, but the Tornado would grab the opener 25-22. King executed on offense hitting .278 with 14 kills while the Royals struggled hitting .146 with 12 kills and six attack errors.
 
The second set saw the visitors grab a 5-2 lead before the Royals would respond and keep the score close. King eventually rallied four straight and increased their lead to 20-15 forcing a Royals timeout. Queens would answer with four more points in the set, but King held on to take the commanding 2-0 lead. King would hit a game-best .480 with 14 kills in the set while answered with a team-high .212 and 12 kills. The errors mounted for the Royals, specifically from the service line committing five faults in the set.
 
In the final set, King jolted ahead 10-3 and never looked back. The visitors would accumulate nine kills on a .346 hitting percentage to pick up the Saturday sweep. For the match, King hit .356 with 37 kills and only six attack errors while Queens earned 36 kills, but committed 19 attack errors.
 
Jack Brinkman led the Royals with 11 kills while adding seven digs. Daniel Leitao earned his third consecutive double-double, and fifth this season dishing out 30 assists and recording 12 digs. Matthew Pilch would add nine kills for the Royals attack on 25 attempts.
 
Queens will return to action on Friday, March 18 when they host North Greenville University at 7:00 p.m. inside Curry Arena.
