Royals Sweep No. 11 Newberry Securing Weekend Conference Series

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Queens University of Charlotte baseball team (17-14, 11-4 SAC) swept their Saturday doubleheader with No. 11 Newberry College (26-6, 9-3 SAC) at Smith Road Complex in Newberry, S.C. The Royals win their fourth conference series of the year, as they showed resiliency, responding after dropping game one Friday Night. For the first time in program history, the Royals notched a weekend series victory over a Top 25 team. Queens will return to action this Tuesday afternoon at Tuckaseegee Dream Fields, with a midweek matchup against Belmont Abbey at 3:00 p.m.

Game 1: Queens 7, Newberry 2 (Final/14)
Game one was a thrilling marathon, as the Royals outlasted the Wolves in 14 innings. The extra inning showdown was the sixth time this season the Royals have played additional innings, and the longest game this season. Carter Foster, Garrett Evans, Matt Riley and Riley Cheek all had a pair of hits on the day. Six other Royals mailed in hits for the Royals. Foster had the lone extra-base hit in the game with a triple. Out of the bullpen, Daniel Bagwell was sensational pitching a stellar 9.2 innings of scoreless baseball, allowing just four hits. The junior picked up the win, as he closed the door in the 14th inning. Bagwell's 9.2 innings is the longest outing by a Royals pitcher in program history.

After both teams had trouble offensively to start, the Wolves got the scoring started with a two-run home run in the fourth inning. The Royals would scratch a run across in the sixth, after three consecutive singles. A Carter Foster single would get the Royals first run of the weekend on the board.

In the seventh, the Royals would tie the game after a single and sacrifice bunt would put a runner in scoring position for the Royals. With two outs, Broadus Roberson would pinch-hit, and he would come up with a timely hit smacking a single through the right side to tie the ball game.

The Royals would threaten again in the eighth, after a Carter Foster triple put a runner on third with one out. However, on the next at-bat he was gunned down at home after a ground ball was hit to the first baseman.

As the game entered extra innings, the pitching for both teams became dominant. Heading into the fourteenth inning, there were a combined four hits for each team in extra innings. In the fourteenth, the Royals would explode for five runs as two walks and a sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third with one out for the Royals. Nick Brassington would single putting one across for the Royals before Tanner Jacobson would follow that up with another single to score the second run of the inning for the Royals. A walk, a fielder's choice, and a single by Mason Pickard would score three more runs for the visitors as they took a 7-2 lead.

Bagwell would shut the door on the Wolves in the bottom of the fourteenth, as the only runner of the inning was on a hit-by-pitch.

Game 2 Queens 6, Newberry 3
In Game 2 of the doubleheader, Carter Foster, MJ Sasapan and Matt Riley had a pair of hits. Nick Melton, Matt Riley and Riley Cheek had doubles in the nightcap for the Royals. MJ Sasapan and Carter Foster both smashed home runs on the day for the Royals. Tanner Jacobson was stellar in the win for the Royals, pitching 6.2 innings, allowing just one run, with 8 strikeouts. The impressive outing is the third straight game that Jacobson has pitched into the seventh.

The Wolves would get the scoring started in the bottom of the second, after back-to-back singles and an error put runners on second and third with no outs. A wild pitch and a fielder's choice scored two runs for the Wolves, as they took a 2-0 lead.

The Royals would respond with three runs of their own in the second inning. With two outs and runners on first and second, Nick Melton smacked a double to left field scoring both Royals. On the next at-bat, a fielding error by the Wolves scored Melton.

In the third, the Royals would threaten once again loading the bases with two outs. However, a pop out by Nick Melton ended the threat for the Royals. In the fifth, Queens would extend their lead to a commanding 6-2 lead as MJ Sasapan and Carter Foster smashed back-to-back home runs over the left-field fence. A Riley Cheek double would score Tanner Jacobson, to give the Royals a 6-2 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth.

The Wolves would load the bases in the fifth with no outs. However, three straight strikeouts by Jacobson got the Royals out of the jam. In the seventh, the Wolves would come up with a two-out rally with their backs against the wall capitalizing on three straight walks loading the bases. A single through the left side scratched across one run for the Wolves, cutting the deficit to 6-3. However, a groundout to third baseman gave the Royals the crucial victory, 6-3 in Newberry, S.C. as the Royals escaped the Wolves rally.

Queens will return to action this Tuesday afternoon, March 29th, against Belmont Abbey College at Tuckaseegee Dream Fields. The first pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on the Queens Sports Network.
