Royals Rally Falls Short at Mount Olive

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - The Queens University of Charlotte baseball team (15-13, 9-3 South Atlantic Conference) suffered a tough extra innings loss on the road to Mount Olive University (18-8, 9-3 Conference Carolinas) by a final score of 10-9 at Scarborough Field on Tuesday afternoon. Mount Olive managed to plate four runs across the final three innings, including the game-winner in the 10th inning. The extra inning affair was the Royals fourth this season as they fall to 3-2 in extras this season.

Eight different Royals notched a hit on the afternoon, including multi-hit performances from Riley Cheek, Nick Brassington, and Nick Melton. Carter Foster smoked a grand slam in the seventh which proved to be a turning point in the game for the Royals. Three other Royals, Dillon Lewis, MJ Sasapan, and Mason Pickard tallied extra base hits on the day as well.

The Royals would cross the first run of the game in the first inning by capitalizing on wild pitches from the Trojans starter. Riley Cheek would reach on the first pitch of the game via hit by pitch before moving up to second on a wild pitch. Carter Foster would follow it up with a walk and both runners would advance 90 feet on another passed ball. Nick Brassington would stay hot at the plate reaching on an infield single and scoring cheek. The early hit extended the seniors hitting streak to 11 straight games. The Trojans would add two back in their half of the first inning as a triple following a lead-off single would score the first run, before a fielder's choice would score the second run of the inning.

The scoring would settle down for both teams, as neither team would score over the next three innings. Heading into the fifth, the Trojans led the Royals 2-1 before extending their lead to 6-1 scoring four runs, after loading the bases. Through the first five innings, the Royals bats would be held at bay as the only hit was an infield single from Brassington.

The offense would finally get going in the sixth when Nick Brassington and Dillon Lewis cracked consecutive singles to lead off the inning. The next two Royals would be retired on a fielder's choice and a pop out. With two outs, Queens continued to work their magic like they have all season. Mason Pickard would send a triple into left field scoring both runs before MJ Sasapan followed with a double in the gap. Nick Melton would single and Queens would put runners on the corners before a Riley Cheek walk set up a Carter Foster grand slam to give the Royals an 8-6 lead. The round tripper was Foster's fifth of the season.

Looking to keep the momentum on their side, Daniel Bagwell would come out the bullpen for the Royals. The junior would need just six pitches to retire the Trojans in order and get the Royals back in the dugout. In the top of the seventh, Queens would manufacture a run following a leadoff double from Dillon Lewis. Matt Riley would move Lewis up to third with a single up the middle before Garrett Evans plated Lewis on a sacrifice fly.

With just six outs remaining, Mount Olive would cut into the deficit in the eighth inning scoring two runs on three hits to trail 9-8 heading into the final inning. Queens would go down in order in the ninth before the Trojans would tie the game on two late inning hits. In the tenth, the Trojans would earn a lead off walk before a double down the line brought across the winning run as the Trojans stormed from behind to win 10-9.

The Royals will return to action this weekend against the No. 13 Newberry Wolves, for a three-game road series in the South Atlantic Conference. Game one is scheduled for Friday at 6:00 p.m. Saturday features a doubleheader, with the first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m., with the second game to follow.
