Royals Sweep Limestone

GAFFNEY, S.C.- The Queens University of Charlotte softball team traveled to Gaffney, S.C., to take on the Limestone University Saints (21-8, 4-6 SAC) in a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader this afternoon taking both games to improve their overall record to 18-14 and their conference record 5-3.

Game One: Queens 2 | Limestone 1

Though both squads would time some time to get on the board in game one, the Saints would strike first as Ashley Barnell recorded an RBI double to plate Maddie Baker in the bottom of the third.

Queens would answer back in the top of the fourth frame scoring two runs to take over control of the game. Ashlyn Mickler would be key in moving two runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt before Jordyn Thompson singled to left bringing Kayla Smith and Jordan Hunt home.

The Saints had a few chances at knotting the game with their final coming in the bottom seventh. However, Queens' defense held strong making the double play on a sacrifice bunt before Jordan Dunn struck out the next batter to end the game.

Dunn finished the game pitching all seven innings and striking out eight. Her record improved 8-7.

Game Two: Queens 6 | Limestone 5

After falling behind 1-0 in the bottom of the first, Queens was able to break through in the top of the second scoring three runs. Thompson and Gerlea Patton recorded RBI singles during the at-bat to help move the Royals in front 3-1.

The Saints answered in the bottom of the third, scoring two runs to even the score 3-3. However, an RBI single from Mickler in the top of the fourth returned control to the Royals, 4-3.

Queens then scored two more runs in the top of the fifth with the first coming on a base hit paired with a fielding error by the Saints that allowed Kasidi Staley to score. Hunt then recorded an RBI single to put the Royals in front 6-3.

A two-run homer from Katie Wilbur over the left-field fence cut into Queens' lead, 6-5, in the bottom of the fifth. However, the Royals' defense would step up again holding off the Saints in the sixth and seventh to collect the series sweep on the road.

Dunn pitched all seven innings again in game two striking out five while allowing seven hits and five runs. She is now 9-7 on the year.

The Royals will look to continue their winning streak on Wednesday, Mar. 23 at Coker University. The first game of the doubleheader is set to begin at 2 p.m.
