Royals Sweep Saints for Second Conference Sweep of the Season

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Queens University of Charlotte baseball team (13-10, 7-2 SAC) completed the South Atlantic Conference weekend sweep by defeating Limestone University (3-23, 1-9 SAC) 7-6 on Sunday afternoon at Tuckaseegee Dream Fields. The win completes the regular season sweep of the Saints as the Royals get their second conference sweep of the season.

Garrett Evans, Nick Brassington, and Christian Maggio tabbed multi-hit games for the Royals. Maggio went a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate. Evans smacked two doubles on the days and drove in two runs for the Royals. Dillon Lewis smashed a two-run home run for the Royals. Daniel Bagwell got the win for the Royals on the mound, putting down the final four Saints hitters to close out the series sweep for Queens.

Both the Saints and the Royals added two runs in the first. A leadoff double and a single put runners on second and third with no outs for the Saints. A fielder's choice, followed by a double would score the two runners for the Saints. In the Royals half of the first, following a leadoff double, Dillon Lewis smashed a 1-1 fastball for a two-run homerun to tie the game.

In the second, the Saints conjured up a two-out rally. A single to center field, followed up by a double added a run back for the Saints in the third. The Royals and Saints would each go scoreless in the 3rd, fourth and fifth as the pitching staffs for both clubs settled into the game. The Royals pitching staff, after giving up three runs, put down the Saints in order in each of the next three innings.

In the sixth inning, two singles and an error loaded the bases for the Saints with one out. A fielder's choice would add another run for the Saints, as they took a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth. The Royals bats would come alive in the sixth, as they poured on four runs to take a 6-4 lead.

Two errors by the Saints put runners on second and third with one out for the Royals. A single by Will Budnick, scored Dillon Lewis and Riley Cheek. After the Royals would load the bases, a Garrett Evans double to left field scored Christian Maggio and Zach Weston, as the Royals took their first lead of the game.

A scoreless seventh followed the fireworks in the sixth. With a runner on third with two outs, a timely hit by the Saints cut the Royals lead to 6-5. On the next at-bat, a single and a fielding error scored the second run of the inning for the Saints, knotting the game at 6 heading into the bottom of the eighth.

In the Royals half of the inning, a Zach Weston one-out triple, followed by a Christian Maggio single gave the Royals the lead right back.  Daniel Bagwell would put the Saints down in order as the Royals secured the 7-6 victory.

The Royals return to action, this Tuesday, March 15th, as they travel to Belmont Abbey College for a midweek contest. First pitch is scheduled for 6 pm.
