Royals Drop Two at Flagler Invitational

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The Queens University of Charlotte softball team (1-3, 0-0 SAC) fell in both of their games today at the Flagler Invitational, losing to Georgia Southwestern (1-3) and Lynn University (2-1).

Game One: Georgia Southwestern 8  Queen 0

Queens suffered an 8-0 loss to the Georgia Southwestern Hurricanes in their first game of the day.

Georgia Southwestern kicked off the scoring with two runs in the second after capitalizing on an error by the Royals in the left field. Zoe Willis then recorded an RBI on a double in the third before scoring a run of her own on a wild pitch.

A grand slam by the Hurricanes' Katelyn Wood then gave the game its 8-0 score in the fifth to end play.

Freshman pitcher Jordan Dunn would record six strikeouts en route to moving to 0-2 on the year. Willis took the win in the circle after striking out eight batters. The Royals recorded just three hits in the game.

Game Two: Lynn University 6  Queen 4

An early run in the second game of the day would give the Royals the lead, but they were unable to hold on to it as Lynn took control and remained in front through the remainder of play to win 6-4.

Super senior Jordan Hunt would record the early RBI after doubling to right field with fellow super senior Gerlea Patton on second. Patton scored to put the Royals on top 1-0, but it was short-lived as the Fighting Knights' Monique Poitevin would answer back with a two-run blast over the left field fence in the top of the second.

Lynn then put another run on the board in the fourth when Brittney Davis homered to left field also.

Trailing 3-1, Queens would answer back at the bottom of the fifth when Hunt scored on an error by Lynn's second baseman.

With Queens within one, 3-2, the Fighting Knights found two more runs in the top of the sixth to extend their lead to 5-2. The first run would come when Janelle Dominguez hit another home run to left field.  A walk with the bases loaded soon followed.

Queens' Hunt would step up once again with an answer sending a ball over the left center fence with Patton on base again to make it a one-run game, 5-4.

In the top of the seventh, Lynn's Dominguez would record her second home run of the game to put the Fighting Knights in front 6-4 and that score would be the final as the Royals were unable to get anything going in the bottom.

Hunt finished the game with three hits, three RBI, and two runs while Haley Hmiel and Mickler each recorded two hits.  In the pitching circle, Queens used two different arms as Khristen McPherson took the loss after playing five innings to move to 1-1 on the year.

Queens will complete play at the Flagler Invitation on Sunday, Feb. 6 taking on Florida Southern College at 10 a.m.
