Royals Split Doubleheader at Flagler

ST. AUGUSTINE, FLA. – The Queens University of Charlotte softball team (1-1, 0-0 SAC) split its season-opening doubleheader at Flagler College this afternoon. The doubleheader with the Saints was part of the Flagler Invitational which will continue through the weekend.

Game One: Flagler 3 Queens 1

In the opening game of the day, both the Royals and the Saints had a slow start offensively. The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Saints scored all three of their runs. With two on base, Kyleigh Taylor hit a home run to put her team in front. The Royals then left two on base in the top of the seventh to close the game. Ashlyn Mickler led Queens with two of the Royals' six hits in the loss.

Game Two: Queens 5 Flagler 2

The Royals redeemed themselves in game two taking control in the fifth to complete the series split.

Trailing 1-0 after the Saints were able to get one runner across the plate in the bottom of the fourth, the Royals finally got on the board at the top of the fourth after Jordyn Thompson scored off of Kaylee DeJesus single to left field. Later in the inning, Jordan Hunt singled to left field to allow DeJesus to score and put Queens on top, 2-1.

After holding Flagler scoreless in the bottom of the fourth, Queens continued to build upon their lead in the fifth when DeJesus recorded another RBI bringing Thompson home. Gerlea Patton then singled to second base and recorded an RBI bringing Hayley Nelson across the plate to give the game a 4-1 score.

The Saints would find just one more run in the bottom of the fifth as Queens' Kayla Smith was able to help seal the Royals' victory with a home run to center field in the sixth.

Senior Khristen McPherson collected her first win since the 2020 season pitching all seven innings. She totaled three strikeouts.

The Royals totaled 12 hits in the win compared to Flagler's three.
